For the past 66 years Montgomery, Alabama has hosted college tennis action at its Blue Gray Tennis Classic and this year will be no different with the 2015 edition getting started on Friday and running through Sunday. The tournament started off as an individual tournament and was changed to the team format in 1984 at the request of Jack Bushman who is known as Montgomery’s Mr. Tennis. Until 2010 it was just a men’s tournament with the women being added to the fold starting in 2011. For more about the history of this event you can click the link here.
Boise State is back as the 2-time defending champion on the men’s side while Alabama is the #1 seed on the women’s side and is looking to defend its title from last year. I’d say the odds of Boise State winning for a 3rd time in a row are slim to none with this year’s Broncos squad off to a slow 3-5 start including 0-4 at neutral sites. I’d say Mississippi State has the easiest path to the finals while the top half of the bracket is fairly wide open with Texas Tech possibly looming as a dark horse.
As you can see there have been a lot of top 10 teams that have participated at the Blue Gray over the years with some recognizable names as MVP.
You can follow along throughout the weekend via the tournament’s master scoreboard. The event is held at 2 different sites in Montgomery so at times there is an occasional lag in score updating.
