Sunday Preview – UVA at Baylor & Wake Forest at Texas, Vandy at Ole Miss

Sunday will bring us some big time showdowns as #5 Baylor hosts #11 Virginia in Waco, #6 Texas hosts #12 Wake Forest in Austin, and #10 Ole Miss hosts #16 Vanderbilt in Oxford.  All 3 of these matches will be played indoors due to poor weather.

#11 Virginia (7-1) at #5 Baylor (8-2) – 2pm est – Live Scoring & Video (if outside) & Blog –  It was just 2 weeks ago that Baylor upset Virginia 4-3 in the National Indoors Quarterfinals and with temperatures expected to be in the 40s with a chance of rain this one will likely end up indoors too.  I expect both Brian Boland and Matt Knoll to do some tinkering with their respective lineups to try to avoid some unfavorable rematches.  I’d be surprised if Mitchell Frank was back at #1 to face Julian Lenz with Lenz having rolled in their last 2 encounters.  In my opinion I think Ryan Shane will get the call to step up to #1 with Frank dropping to #2.  Even though Tony Lupieri knocked off Thai Son Kwiatkowski in the last meeting I think Lupieri will probably play at #2 like he did against UCLA last weekend.  I’d also be a little surprised if Matt Knoll stuck with the same bottom 3 that he had in the last meeting since Virginia won at #4 and #6 in routine fashion.


Baylor is a perfect 10-0 in doubles while Virginia is 7-1.  Baylor needs the doubles point more because even though they’ll come into this one feeling pretty confident it’d be hard to see them taking 4 singles matches from Virginia let alone 3.  I think Baylor will take the doubles point but after that I see Virginia really digging in during singles with Mitchell Frank, Thai Son Kwiatkowski, Colin Altamirano, JC Aragone, and Ryan Shane all winning to give Virginia a little revenge from the defeat in Chicago.  Prediction: Virginia 5-2

#12 Wake Forest (8-2) at #6 Texas (10-1) – 1pm est – Live Scoring – This will be the 3rd time these teams have met in the last 56 weeks with Texas winning each of the previous encounters by a 4-3 score.  This is probably one of the best teams that Wake Forest has ever put out while Texas by in large has the same team as last year except for the rotation at #6 singles.  Wake comes in 7-3 in doubles while Texas is 5-6.  I like Texas at 1 and 2 doubles and Wake at 3 so I see Texas getting the point and taking the 1-0 lead.

The matchup that everyone will want to see will be at #1 as Soren Hess-Olesen puts his 13-match winning streak on the line against Wake’s highly touted freshman Noah Rubin. Hess-Olesen has dropped 1 set in his last 14 matches, which includes wins over #10 Brayden Schnur and #13 Winston Lin, while Rubin has looked good so far but has lost his only 2 matches against top 15 opponents (#12 Andrew Harris & #15 Mikelis Libietis).  I like Hess-Olesen to make it 14 in a row as I see the Texas senior getting past Rubin in 3 sets.  At #2 singles Lloyd Glasspool will put his 7 match winning streak on the line as he takes on Romain Bogaerts who has won 3 of his last 4.  I think Bogaerts is just a little better and will take this in 2 tight sets.  The matchup at #3 is the biggest mismatch in my opinion and I’d be shocked if the final result was anything other than a straight set win by Berkowicz who has won 10 of his last 11.  The bottom 3 courts should all be tightly contested as well and I’m leaning toward Naumann at 4, Seraphim at 5, and Kan at 6.  Prediction: Texas 4-3

#16 Vanderbilt (10-2) at #10 Ole Miss (8-2) – 2pm est – Live Scoring & Blog – This will be the SEC opener for Ole Miss while Vanderbilt opened up conference play on Friday with a 4-0 win over Arkansas.  Rain is in the forecast for Sunday so this one will likely be pushed indoors to Ole Miss’s 3 court facility.  Doubles has not been one of Ole Miss’s strengths as the Rebels have dropped the point against 5 of 6 ranked opponents while Vanderbilt has won the doubles point against 4 of 6 ranked opponents.  I think Vanderbilt takes the doubles point and then with just 3 courts in use I think Vandy puts the pressure on Ole Miss and picks up wins from both Gonzales Austin and Kris Yee to take a 3-1 lead with Stefan Lindmark winning for Ole Miss at 2.  With Vanderbilt only needing 1 of the bottom 3 courts I think they get the clincher from Danny Valent at #4 singles to pull off the mild upset.  Prediction:  Vanderbilt 4-2
