Comments from Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott

Day 3 – “Much tougher today as the team only went 2-6 in singles and three of those matches were tough losses of three sets that didn’t go our way. Dusty beat a kid ranked 77th from Florida State in two straight sets and seemed to play better as the tournament went on from day to day. Marc Herrmann also played very well today and took down a very solid player from Hawaii to finish strong.  As a team today, if we win a few of those three\-setters then it would have been a good day but we had a very good fight, and I feel like this team will only get better as the year goes on. We have some areas to improve upon such as return of serves and also attacking on short balls but not trying to go for the lines and trying to hit too big of a shot. We have a few weeks now to get ready for some indoor tennis and our anxious to play our first match ever on our new indoor courts!”

Day 2 – “We had a pretty good day again going 5-3 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles. The heat was a little stronger today, and I felt the guys did a pretty good job of adjusting to the conditions and learning to battle for each and every point in all of their matches. As long as we continue to work hard, compete, and work on improving then good things will happen.”

Day 1 – “It was a good first day of competition to start the year, as we went 6-2 overall in doubles and 5-3 in sinlges against Florida State and Hawaii.  Toby and Dusty Boyer had a great doubles win, knocking off the No. 55 team in the country from Florida State by the score of 8-4. Overall a good performance, and I am looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow.”

There were a lot of college guys in action yesterday at the Los Angeles F1 Futures and a few guys are this weekend playing over in Australia/New Zealand.

In Los Angeles, USC freshman Jake DeVine (13.24) earned his first ATP point after upsetting Virginia junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (14.73) 6-4, 6-3. DeVine broke Kwiatkowski to go up 3-2 in the first and then held serve in an epic 6-deuce game to go up 4-2 (won’t see that in college). DeVine held from 40-30 in his next two service games to take the opening set 6-4. DeVine went ahead in the second set when he broke Kwiatkowski’s 1-1 service game and the only heat he’d feel the rest of the way came when he served up 4-3. Kwiatkowski had 3 break points to get the match back on serve but DeVine managed to fight each of them off and eventually held in a 4-deuce game to go up 5-3. DeVine then broke Kwiatkowski from 30-40 to close out the 6-4, 6-3 win.

Due to rain washing out play on Wednesday, DeVine had to come back out and play his second round match 3 hours later against an opponent, Philip Bester (14.47), that had been resting since his first round win on Tuesday. Despite the quick turnaround DeVine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before Bester won 3 straight to even it at 3-3. The opening set would go to a tiebreak and after jumping out to a 3-1 lead DeVine would drop the next 6 point to lose the breaker 7-3. The second set stayed on serve until Bester broke from 15-40 to go up 5-3 and then the Canadian held to close out the 7-6(3), 6-3 win.

Virginia senior and defending NCAA singles champion Ryan Shane (14.93) won a pair of matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. Shane won his first round match over #357 Deiton Baughman (14.81) 7-5, 7-5 in a match where Shane hit 12 aces and 11 double faults. Shane broke Baughman’s 5-6 serve game in each set and was only broke once himself.

Shane didn’t have too much time to soak in the win because he had to get back on the court a few hours later to face recent USC graduate Yannick Hanfmann (14.67) who also won his first round match earlier in the day. Hanfmann took the early lead when he broke Shane at love to go up 2-1 and Yannick would ride that break lead to a 6-4 first set. Shane would get his first break of the match when he broke Hanfmann in a 1 deuce game to go 4-2 however Hanfmann would break right back from 30-40 and then hold from 40-30 to even it at 4-4. The second set would go to a tiebreak and after Shane fell behind an early mini-break he rallied to win 7 of the next 8 points to take it 7-2.

Shane’s momentum would carry over to the third set and he broke Hanfmann to take the early 1-0 lead. Shane fought off a break point in his next service game and then went on to hold 4 more times to finish off the 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 win.  Next up in the quarters is Philip Bester (14.47)

USC senior Max de Vroome (13.97) ran into the same problem that his teammate Jake DeVine faced. Just a few hours after de Vroome won a grueling 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3) match over UCLA’s Martin Redlicki (13.85) he had to come back out and play a well rested #351 Stefan Kozlov (14.66). De Vroome hung tough against Kozlov but came out on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-3 result.

I couldn’t find the URL so I attached the email I got from Steve Pratt that has comments from Jake DeVine and Ryan Shane.
