Texas A&MSometimes rematches result in different outcomes and sometimes they don’t – tonight’s Ohio State/Texas A&M match in Columbus turned out to be the latter. These teams met just five days ago in the National Indoors consolation rounds with Ohio State pulling out a 4-3 squeaker but this evening it was all Buckeyes.
Last week Texas A&M won the doubles point, though Herkko Pollanen didn’t play, but tonight with Pollanen playing at #1 with Mikael Torpegaard they and the team cruised past A&M.
Ohio State swapped Martin Joyce and Ralf Steinbach at #5 and #6 and Hugo Di Feo and Chris Diaz at #2 and #3. Texas A&M swapped Jordi Arconada and Shane Vinsant at #2 and #3 which meant both of those matchups stayed the same from the previous meeting. Harrison Adams also returned to the lineup tonight after sitting out on Sunday. (box score from last week is below tonight’s box score)
Ohio State won four first sets in singles with Chris Diaz, Martin Joyce, and Ralf Steinbach winning in straight sets at #3, #5, and #6 with Diaz providing the clincher. The match only took an hour and forty-six minutes so those 267 in attendance got a chance to eat dinner at a reasonable hour.
It was interesting to see some differences in scores from the one match to the next. Vinsant beat Diaz 6-4, 6-4 last time but tonight Diaz rolled him 6-3, 6-2. Last time Steinbach beat Withrow in a long three setter but tonight he beats him 6-2, 6-4 in just over an hour.
Below are a few match points courtesy of TOSU (first time I recall seeing some video clips – awesome) and below the box scores are some quotes from Ty Tucker (also awesome since we usually don’t hear much from Ty).

Post-Match Quotes via Ohio State’s recap
“It’s never easy beating a good team twice in a week,” said Director of Tennis Ty Tucker. “We got smoked in doubles on Sunday and we made a couple of adjustments this week and guys stepped up and set the tone early. Doubles may be their best point and when we were able to get the upper hand early, I think it shocked them a little bit.”
“The win feels good but we can’t celebrate too long because another top-25 team in Florida is coming in on Sunday,” Tucker said.

#15 Oklahoma State sat a few of its singles starters (reasons unknown) and one of its doubles pairings against unranked Georgia State and it nearly came back to bite them. Oklahoma State sat its usual #3 team of Lukas Finzelberg/Jurance Mendoza and wouldn’t you know it but the doubles point came down to that court with Georgia State’s Jannis Koeke and Joseph Bishop taking it 7-6(5).
Oklahoma State sat its usual #2, #59 Julian Cash (13.81), and #4, Lucas Gerch (13.56), in singles after each played in doubles which meant both Jurence Mendoza and Nathan Roper moved into the lineup. Mendoza had only played in two of Oklahoma State’s nine dual match while Roper had appeared just once.
Oklahoma State took four first sets in singles but only Temur Ismailov and Tristan Meraut would be able to finish in straight sets at #1 and #3. Lukas Finzelberg put Oklahoma State up 3-1 after a three-set win at #4 but Georgia State’s Zack Kennedy would answer with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) upset win over Arjun Kadhe at #2.
Both of the remaining matches went deep into the third set but Oklahoma State would get the win when Jurence Mendoza broke Jack MacFarlane from 15-40 to take it 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 at #5.
Note: Zack Kennedy’s win over Arjun Kadhe at #2 was a Universal Tennis Rating upset since the variance between the two was greater than 1.00.
Georgia State’s Felipe Jaworski won the remaining court 7-6(6) in the third at #6.

“Tonight was a tough match,” coach Jay Udwadia said. “Georgia State came ready to play and it got tight at the end, but it was nice to see Jurence (Mendoza) clinch the match. I think we needed to do a better job of playing with more energy today because we can’t rely on catching up at the end each time.”
“It means that I’m getting older (picked up 200th career win),” Udwadia said. “I’ve had some really great players play for me in my time, so it’s really all about the team because at the end of the day I just want the team to win.”
“At the end of the day, we got a win over a very good team with some struggle and it was nice to see the team get through it,” Udwadia said.
Today was a great college tennis match. It’s always exciting to have the chance to play against a top-15 team and I thought our guys definitely stepped up to the challenge, said head coach Brett Ross. “All of our guys stayed focused for three straight hours and as a coach you can’t ask for more than that from you players. It’s encouraging to know that this young team was so close pulling off the biggest win in school history.

“Credit to LSU for its strong start and play in doubles. It was our first match outdoors and oddly we gained a bit of confidence in doubles as we started seeing the ball better and striking it better as the match went on,” Drake head coach Davidson Kozlowski said.
“We did well in singles pushing three of the matches into third sets and also having control of court five. We will continue to play better and stronger outdoors as we continue this weekend. We are pumped for Louisiana on Saturday and then wrapping this trip up at No. 27 Tulane on Sunday,”
Kozlowski said.

#20 Northwestern picked up a nice 6-1 win on Friday evening over #30 NC State. Northwestern took the doubles point and then won on every court in singles except at #2.

Ben Vandixhorn (Leeks Lim/Daily NU) |
Despite the 6-1 score the match was actually fairly close with four of the six matches decided by a point here and there. NU’s Strong Kirchheimer and Fedor Baev won the two matches that weren’t very close as each won 6-2, 6-3 at #3 and #4. Ben Vandixhorn clinched the win after he put Northwestern up 4-0 with a 6-4, 7-6(7) win at #6 over Igor Saveljic.
They played the remaining matches out, which I am a huge fan of, with NU’s Konrad Zieba beating NC State’s Nick Horton in a third set supertiebreak at #1, NU’s Alp Horoz defeating NC State’s Shoti Meparidze 7-5, 7-6 at #5, and NC State gettting is lone win from Simon Norenius at #2 with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Sam Shropshire.

“Justin has been putting in the work and doing the right things, and just hadn’t gotten the results yet,” head coach Matt Hill said. “I think today was a great example of how he stayed with his game plan and it paid off for him. I think it’ll help him a lot moving forward, he’s playing great tennis and it’s great to see him putting it together in the big moments now.
“It’s big actually, because I’ve been losing the first set quite a bit,” Cid said. “One of my goals today was to have a strong start, win the first couple games and just keep rolling. I think I did that, for sure, so I am happy, definitely, to win in straight sets.

Head Coach Nils Schyllander:
“There was a great crowd tonight and a great energy in the building. These guys showed that they have a lot of character and we all showed up tonight. It was a good complete-team effort.
Senior Daan Maasland on his three-set match:
“I didn’t play too bad in the first set, but on a couple close points, I went too big and gave him easy points which led to him winning the set. In the second set, I found my way and started to play more aggressive and more of my game. From when it was 1-1 in the second set, I stepped up and the points started going my way and my serve was better.
