California stays at No. 1 for the fifth week in a row with its margin over the new No. 2 North Carolina at a solid 8.75 points. Ohio State dropped to No. 3 with Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida and Miami staying firm at No. 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Duke comes up two spots to No. 8, Pepperdine stays at No. 9, and South Carolina drops two spots to No. 10

Utah, Washington, Missouri, and Arizona all went up double digits while Tennessee, Florida State, and UT Arlington all dropped by double digits.

The following teams moved up at least 5 spots versus the last rankings – movement in ( ):
#18 Texas A&M (+7)
#28 TCU (+7)
#32 Syracuse (+8)
#37 NC State (+5)
#47 Washington (+14)
#49 South Florida (+7)
#54 Rice (+10)
#57 Washington State (+5)
#59 Utah (+15)
#60 Missouri (+11)
#65 Minnesota (+5)
#66 Arizona (at least +10)
#67 Brown (at least +9)

The following teams dropped down at least 5 spots versus the last rankings (still ranked):
#29 Tulsa (-8)
#40 Denver (-7)
#42 Ole Miss (-6)
#56 Alabama (-5)
#58 UT Arlington (-10)
#63 Harvard (-9)
#68 Indiana (-8)
#69 Florida State (-12)
#73 Louisiana Tech (-7)
#74 Penn (-5)
#75 Tennessee (-12)

These 3 teams entered the rankings after being unranked and the reason why they moved up:
#66 Arizona – beat No. 62 Washington State and previous win over Long Beach State was upgraded when LB moved into the rankings last week
#67 Brown – beat No. 59 Princeton
#71 Cornell – won at No. 54 Harvard

These 3 teams dropped out of the rankings with last week’s rankings in ( ):
UC Santa Barbara (65) – lost to Long Beach State and a few others past wins dropped a few spots
North Texas (73) – beat Memphis and UTSA but lost to unranked SMU
Nebraska (75) – lost to Northwestern and Illinois

Here is the ITA’s release which breaks it down by conference affiliation.

Below I’ll breakdown the Top 8 looking at the 8 best wins that were used in the rankings this week along with other quality ranked wins. I also listed the point totals gained from the best wins and losses to come up with the computer score.

California (17-0) is No. 1 for the fifth week in a row after picking up wins over Oregon and Stanford

  • 8 Best Wins (633.8): #2 Ohio State, #3 North Carolina, #6 Florida, #9 Pepperdine, #12 Virginia, #18 Stanford, at #20 UCLA, at #26 Arizona State,
  • Other Quality Wins: at #27 USC#38 Oregon, #61 Washington, #74 Utah,
  • Losses (8.0): None
  • Computer Score:  633.8/8.0 = 79.23 (was 79.51)
  • What’s Coming Up: at #57 Washington State (4/8), at #47 Washington (4/9), at #19 Stanford (4/16)
  • Comments: Cal won’t have any issues this weekend up in the Evergreen State and will be 19-0 when they go to Stanford for the regular season finale.

North Carolina (21-2) moves up one spot from No. 3 to No. 2 after winning at Duke last Tuesday and then roughing up Louisville over the weekend.

  • 8 Best Wins (592): #4 Georgia, #7 Miami, at #10 Duke, at #12 Virginia, #15 LSU, #19 Wake Forest, #21 Tulsa, #25 Texas A&M
  • Other Quality Wins: at #40 Syracuse, #44 Notre Dame, #51 Alabama, #57 Florida State
  • Losses (8.4): #1 California, at #11 Michigan
  • Computer Score:  592/8.4 = 70.48 (was 71.41)
  • What’s Coming Up:  #37 NC State (4/6), at #30 Virginia Tech (4/8), #55 Boston College (4/10), at #31 Clemson (4/15), at #17 Georgia Tech (4/17), ACC Tournament (Cary NC 4/22-4/24)
  • Comments: North Carolina should roll into the ACC Tournament in Cary, North Carolina, riding a 16-match winning streak because I don’t see them slipping up against anyone else down the stretch.

Ohio State (19-2) falls one spot from No. 2 to No. 3 despite winning at Rutgers and Maryland last week. The reason for the drop is because three of its eight best wins are ranked outside the top 25 while all of North Carolina’s top wins are ranked No. 25 or better.
  • 8 Best Wins (560.2): #5 Vanderbilt (2X), at #11 Michigan, #16 Georgia Tech, #26 Arizona State, at #35 TCU, #39 Fresno State
  • Other Quality Wins: at #50 Baylor, #63 Tennessee, #70 Minnesota
  • Losses (8.3): #1 California, at #7 Miami FL
  • Computer Score:  560.2/8.3 = 67.49 (was 71.79)
  • What’s Coming Up: Iowa (4/9), Nebraska (4/10), #50 Illinois (4/15), #38 Northwestern (4/17), at #68 Indiana (4/23), at Purdue (4/24), Big Ten Tournament (East Lansing 4/29-5/1)
  • Comments: The Buckeyes shouldn’t be tested again until they face Michigan in the finals of the Big Ten Tournament. The lack of depth in the Big Ten is going to hurt Ohio State’s computer score. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Buckeyes fall down another spot next week and they could end up ranked outside of the top 5 come tournament time if Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Florida keep winning.
Georgia (15-2) stays at No. 4 after winning at home over Arkansas and Missouri but it has closed the gap on No. 3 Ohio State and should overtake them next week if they win at both LSU and Texas A&M this coming weekend.

  • 8 Best Wins (542.9): #11 Michigan, #12 Virginia, #13 Texas Tech, #14 Auburn, at #16 Georgia Tech, at #23 Kentucky, #24 Arkansas, at #28 Mississippi State
  • Other Quality Wins: #29 Clemson,  at #36 Ole Miss. #51 Alabama, #63 Tennessee, #71 Missouri
  • Losses (8.2): #3 North Carolina, #5 Vanderbilt
  • Computer Score: 542.9/8.2 = 66.21 (was 66.72)
  • What’s Coming Up: at #16 LSU (4/8), at #18 Texas A&M (4/10), #6 Florida (4/15), #10 South Carolina (4/17), SEC Tournament (Baton Rouge 4/22-24)
  • Comments: The Bulldogs have two tough road contest this weekend and if they get through those unscathed they’ll have two even tougher matches the following weekend when Florida and South Carolina come to Athens.

Vanderbilt (14-4) stays at No. 5 after winning at both Mississippi State and Ole Miss. The gap between VU and UGA widened a tad due to Texas A&M dropping from No. 17 to No. 25.
  • 8 Best Wins (550.4): #4 Georgia, #10 Duke, #12 Virginia,  #15 LSU, #18 Stanford, #23 Kentucky, #25 Texas A&M, at #28 Mississippi State
  • Other Quality Wins: #33 Denver, at #36 Ole Miss, at #41 Northwestern, #63 Tennessee, at #50 Baylor
  • Losses (8.6): #2 Ohio State (2X), #6 Florida, #8 South Carolina,
  • Computer Score: 550.4/8.6 = 64.00 (was 65.92)
  • What’s Coming Up: at #60 Missouri (4/8), at #27 Arkansas (4/10), #13 Auburn (4/15), #56 Alabama (4/17), SEC Tournament (Baton Rouge 4/22-24)
  • Comments: The Commodores are on the road for the second week in a row but they should win both before welcoming in a top 15 Auburn team the following weekend.

Florida (14-2) stays at No. 6 after picking up wins over LSU and Texas A&M and it’s now less than a point behind No. 5 Vanderbilt.
  • 8 Best Wins (536.6): #5 Vanderbilt, at #8 South Carolina, #15 LSU, #23 Kentucky, #24 Arkansas, #25 Texas A&M, #27 USC, at #28 Mississippi State
  • Other Quality Wins: #29 Clemson, at #36 Ole Miss, #50 Baylor, #56 South Florida, at #57 Florida State, #71 Missouri,
  • Losses (8.5): at #1 Cal, at #18 Stanford
  • Computer Score:  536.6/8.5 = 63.13 (was 62.23)
  • What’s Coming Up: at #56 Alabama (4/8), at #13 Auburn (4/10), at #4 Georgia (4/15), at #75 Tennessee (4/17), SEC Tournament (Baton Rouge 4/22-24)
  • Comments: The Gators win streak is now at nine and it’ll probably be at eleven when it goes to Athens on April 15. As with Georgia and Vanderbilt, I’d say whoever wins the SEC ends up no worse than the No. 3 seed in the NCAAs and possibly the No. 2 seed.

Miami (13-4) stays at No. 7 after winning on the road at Clemson.

  • 8 Best Wins (529.3): #2 Ohio State, #12 Virginia, at #14 Auburn, #16 Georgia Tech, #17 Oklahoma State, at #29 Clemson #31 Virginia Tech, #37 Columbia
  • Other Quality Wins: #44 Notre Dame, #55 Boston College, at #57 Florida State
  • Losses (8.9): #3 North Carolina, #10 Duke, #11 Michigan, #13 Texas Tech
  • Computer Score:  529.3/8.9 = 59.47 (was 58.46)
  • What’s Coming Up: at #20 Wake Forest (4/8), at #37 NC Sate (4/9), #32 Syracuse (4/15), Louisville (4/17), ACC Tournament (Cary NC 4/22-4/24)
  • Comments: The Canes have a tough road trip this weekend and I’d expect Wake Forest to give them all they want. If they get past Wake, Miami should be fine until the ACC Tournament.

Duke (15-3) rises two spots from No. 10 to No. 8 after winning at Virginia, beating Notre Dame at home, and losing to North Carolina.
  • 8 Best Wins (481.7): #7 Miami, at #12 Virginia, at #19 Wake Forest, #25 Texas A&M, #28 Mississippi State, #34 Texas, #39 Fresno State, at #41 Northwestern
  • Other Quality Wins: #40 Syracuse, #44 Notre Dame, #57 Florida State,
  • Losses (8.9): #3 North Carolina, #5 Vanderbilt, #11 Michigan, #31 Virginia Tech
  • Computer Score:  481.7/8.9 = 54.12 (was 54.92)
  • What’s Coming Up: #11 Michigan (4/6), #55 Boston College (4/9), #37 NC State (4/12), at #17 Georgia Tech (4/15), at #31 Clemson (4/17), ACC Tournament (Cary NC 4/22-4/24)
  • Comments: Duke just dropped a tough 4-3 match to Michigan but they’ll have a chance to rebound against Boston College on Saturday.
