Championship Sunday delivered some great matches throughout the country but the highest profile match took place in Stillwater as Texas Tech met TCU in the finals of the Big 12 Championships. The teams were regular season co-champs but Texas Tech got the No. 1 seed due to its win over TCU in the regular season.
Texas Tech won the doubles point in the regular season meeting and they’d do it again today after picking up a 7-5 win at No. 1 and a 6-4 win at No. 2.
TCU freshman Alex Rybakov made it 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hugo Dojas at No. 2 but Texas Tech sophomore Alex Sendegeya countered with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Guillermo Nunez at No. 3.
TCU junior Jerry Lopez would get the Big 12 Championship clincher with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jolan Cailleau at No. 4.
The match at No. 6 was abandoned with the score even it at 4-4 in the third.

“This is an unbelievable feeling and such an incredible accomplishment for our whole program and our school. It was so great to see our former players here because every single person that has come through our program has had something to do with this title. I am happy for these guys because they were able to hang in there and beat a very tough Texas Tech team.
“I felt like we were playing like they were going to give it to us during doubles. I haven’t been that tough on them between doubles and singles this season, but I felt like today we needed to wake up and know that Texas Tech is not the type of team that is going to give you the win. They are a bunch of tough players at positions one through six and we had to confront that, face it and compete like dogs. Even in the middle of that match, I felt like we still needed to take it up one more notch with enthusiasm and energy and just get our claws out and fight for it. When you are trying to win a Big 12 Championship, you have to fight for it. I didn’t feel like we had that attitude in the doubles.
“I am proud of these guys. They have faced adversity both days at this tournament and they came through. For such a young team, we are growing up fast. I am very proud and I am happy for all our fans that came out and thankful for all our students and fans back home that came out to our matches. This is a great accomplishment for all of us in this program and a great way to end the season and get ready for postseason. We basically start a new season on Tuesday.
“I also don’t know how many three set matches we won in two days, but that is credit to the job our strength and conditioning coach Todd Kensler has done all year long. He has been getting these guys ready for long matches and getting them in shape. I give credit to the players for going through it and also credit to our athletic trainer Lauren Crawford who keeps our players healthy. We are out there fully healthy at this time in the season and it is not a coincidence. That is credit to the players, Lauren and Todd.
“We have a lot of big matches still to play,
Masi said. “We’re going to get the opportunity to host an NCAA Regional in a couple of weeks. We’ll begin to prepare for the teams that will come to Lubbock once the field is announced on Tuesday. Right now, it’s about getting bodies healthy and getting bodies stronger. This team will be fine and has already had a very successful year. Again, we’re going to find ourselves in another moment like this and be able to rebound.

Ohio State won it’s 11th Big Ten Tournament title, and 9th in the last 11 years, with a 4-1 win over the No. 3 seed Illinois. Ohio State claimed the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 then Buckeyes claimed five opening sets in singles.
Aron Hiltzik was the only Illini to take a first set and he’d also be the first to finish as he defeated Hugo Di Feo 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. Ohio State freshman Martin Joyce put the Buckeyes back in front with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alex Jesse at No. 6. Ohio State sophomore Mikael Torpegaard would remain undefeated on the season in dual-match play (23-0) with a 7-6(1), 6-1 win over Aleks Vukic in a battle of two of the top four ranked players.
Ohio State junior Herkko Pollanen would clinch the Championship with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Illinois freshman Aiden Jiang. The other matches were abandoned with Illinois’s Jared Hiltzik up 4-1 in the third at No. 2 while Ralf Steinbach and Julian Childers had just split sets at No. 4.
I do have to mention that it was very frustrating for the college tennis fans out there that there was NOT any live scoring for this match or any of the matches outdoors at Minnesota. If you are hosting a conference championship, especially if you are in a Power $ Conference, then something needs to be done to make sure the college tennis fans have a way to follow the matches. I know Minnesota said there was no wi-fi signal at its outdoors courts but unless those courts are in a blackhole you figure there had to be a wireless cell signal. If you have that turn your phone into a wi-fi hotspot and there you go. If that wasn’t an option then get a few volunteers to text someone back indoors with scoring updates so a live scoreboard could be kept reasonably current. I attended conference tournaments each of the last two weekends and both the AAC and MVC did a great job keeping up with live scoring. I have no idea how the planning of a conference tournament works but if keeping the public informed with scores isn’t one of the top priorities then someone else needs to be organizing it.
I guess it’s some consolation that we can watch what happened when the Big Ten Network shows us the match on May 10th at 7:30 p.m. eastern.

“We are feeling pretty good. It feels pretty amazing, said Director of Tennis Ty Tucker. “It never gets easier, and I am proud of the guys. Most of the season they played with a target on their back by being the highest ranked team in the Big Ten and everybody comes out with nothing to lose. They did a great job winning the doubles point and defending the Buckeye name.”
“We got outplayed today by Ohio state. They were a better team than us,” head coach
Brad Dancer said. “We are showing some improvement in our singles play. Doubles will have to be something that we will take a close look at before the NCAA tournament. We have a great group of guys. It has been a fun and we are looking forward to the NCAA tournament.”

UNLV won its first conference championship since 2007 with a 4-3 win over Boise State in the finals of the Mountain West Championships. Boise State came into the match with a 13-0 record in the Mountain West Tournament but it wasn’t able to win No. 14.
UNLV took the crucial doubles point and then Jakob Amilon extended the lead to 2-0 with a straight set win at No. 1. Boise State tied it up at 2-2 after Toby Mitchell and Kyle Butters won at No. 3 and No. 4 but the Rebels would retake the lead after Adam Gage-Brown won at No. 5.
Boise State’s Thomas Tenreiro tied it at 3-3 with a three-set win at No. 2 but UNLV’s Richard Solberg had opened up a 5-1 lead in the third set against Lew Roskilly at No. 6. Roskilly would break and hold to pull within 5-3 but Solberg closed it out from 40-30 with a forehand winner to give UNLV the Championship.
Below are some highlights from the Mountain West Network which does a phenomenal job every year covering the conference tournament. Not only do they have live scoring for every match but they also have a streaming broadcast of every men’s and women’s match (including the opening rounds).

“On our Facebook page, Mehdi Bouras’ dad wrote a nice message to the team saying ‘Don’t just be happy to be in the final — go out and win it.’ And that’s what I told the guys — and that’s what we did,” said head coach Owen Hambrook. “And this one is for Mehdi (2011 Mountain West Player of the Year who tragically passed away at the age of 24 in 2013). It’s been a while since our last one and it feels awesome. This is for all of the Rebels, not just this year’s group, but all of them over the years. This is such a great group of guys — one through nine — and they got it done today.”

Army is heading back to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history after winning a 4-3 thriller over the top seed Navy in the final of the Patriot League Championships. This was the third straight year, and eighth time in the last ten years, these two had met in the finals.
Navy won the regular season meeting just one week ago 4-2 but today it was Army that flipped the script. The Mids won the doubles point and then all four singles matches at one through four would go three-sets at the four-court indoor facility.
Navy’s Austin Jones won at No. 1 but Army picked up wins from Grant Riechmann, David Mitchell, and Michael Nguyen at No. 2, 3, and 4. Navy’s Tucker Massie tied it at 3-3 with a straight set win at No. 6 so the match would be decided in a third set tiebreak at No. 5. Army’s Kyle Barnes opened up a 6-1 lead in the tiebreak before Navy’s Krishna Jana won the next to make it 6-4. Barnes would close it out on the next point to seal the Patriot Championship.

“It was an exciting match,” said Army head coach Jim Poling. “It’s always fun to play and compete against Navy. I thought we competed hard and it was a great match, one of the best matches we’ve played in a while.
“Kyle hung in tough and was competitive,” stated Poling. “He was a grinder.”
“We were 1-4 in three-set singles matches, said Navy head coach Chris Garner. “We had opportunities in each of the four matches we lost, but were unable to cross the finish line.
“It was a great environment for both teams. You could really see how much it meant to all of the players.
“Austin Jones had an incredible season, both on and off the court with this team, said Garner. “I hope we have players who look to step up next season to continue building upon the culture the players have been creating the last two seasons.

“Today was an unbelievable effort by the entire team. I’m so excited for the guys as we put in a lot of hard work the last few weeks. We had a historic season to this point, but it all came down to today, said Assistant Coach
Cory Hubbard. The heat from the weekend was a factor, and we have a deep team so some guys being rested was key. It was fitting that our three most experienced guys got the wins in singles. Roberto Livi was unbelievable again in the tournament and it played out perfectly having Lucas Hejhal and Vaidik Munshaw get the final points. It’s been a great season with 21 wins, but we truly feel we can make a run in the NCAA Tournament.

“Idaho has an extremely talented team and we played our best tennis to barely pull it out,” Director of Tennis Brad Ferreira said. “What an exciting day for Weber State tennis. I couldn’t be prouder of this incredible group of men.”
“I hate to say that someone deserves something but these seniors deserved this win,” Ferreira said. “They have worked hard and competed extremely well for four years. They’ve had disappointment of being in the championships three other times and not getting it done. With a 36-6 Big Sky Record they deserved some recognition.”
“We fought well, just not well enough,” said head coach Abid Akbar. “I hope the boys have their heads held high because I’m proud of them.”

“The saying we’ve been going with all year has been count on me,’ Emhardt said. “Everyone goes out and does their thing on their court. Everyone on the team was accountable. (Jeffrey) and I brought it early and were lucky enough to be done quickly. I think that gave the rest of our guys confidence.
“It’s hard to put into words the feelings right now, Emhardt said. “Looking back, it’s the workouts, the extra sets in the weight room. It’s how you eat, how you sleep. All the extra hours on the court. Everything pays off in that one moment.
“This has just been building, associate head coach Michael Woodson said. “It just felt like it was our time. There were no nerves, I wasn’t nervous for a single second. The guys were just confidence, and when things got tight, we did it the right way.
“We’re getting right back to work, Woodson said. “Our five losses were on the road to strong teams that are ranked or were ranked at the time. We know that nobody wants to play us. Nobody wants to see Valpo on the other side of the court. Of course we’re excited right now, but we are not done. We’re going to build on this and we’re going to make a run in the NCAA tournament.
“I think we got a great effort from all the guys,” first-year head coach Daniel Bickett said. “We left it all out on the court. Hats off to Valpo, they played a tremendous match. We gave them our best shot and they kept bringing it.”
“I’m proud of this team. It was a challenging year, there were a lot of things that could have knocked us off our path and we just kept growing and moving forward.”
“I’ve only had the pleasure of coaching (the seniors) for one year, but I could tell that the intensity, the level of passion that they bring is a big reason why our program is where it is today.”
“I told them we’re going to do our best to continue to pass that torch down to the next group of guys. We have a great group that’s coming back next year, and we’ll take this as a learning experience.”

Thanks – I try to stay as neutral as possible.
I usually do not care for Bobby's UGA agenda but I must agree with you. He is doing an adequate job on these conference tournaments!
Thanks for the Fabuous recap and thanks for asking the Big Ten to up their game! You are right on point as usual.
Scoring issues during the Big Ten tournament were so annoying, I will echo that complaint
