Clemson head coach John Boetsch announced the hiring of Ryan Young as the Tigers new assistant coach. Young played at Clemson from 2004 to 2007 and spent the last three years in Columbia as Josh Goffi’s assistant coach at South Carolina.
Florida Atlantic announced it was going to be spending $800K on a new eight-court on-campus facility. FAU has been playing its home matches five miles away at Patch Reef Park while they’ve been using the six on-campus courts for practice.
Wimbledon (Grass)
John Isner (Georgia ’07) picked up a nice straight set win (7-6, 7-6, 6-3) over Marcos Baghdatis to move into the second round. The match was originally supposed to be played on Tuesday but it was pushed back two days due to rain. Isner will meet Australian qualifier Matthew Barton in he second round on Friday in the opening match of the day on court 18 (5 a.m. ET).
Steve Johnson (USC ’12) moved into the third round after a 6-1, 7-6, 6-3 win over France’s Jeremy Chardy. Johnson will face #37 Grigor Dimitrov on Friday morning in the third match scheduled on court 18.
Benjamin Becker (Baylor ’05) will have a tough second round match on Friday when he gets #9 Tomas Berdych in the opening match on court 3 (5 a.m. ET).
Dennis Novikov (UCLA ’13) suffered a tough 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 loss to #31 Joao Sousa.
$25K Wichita, KS, USA F23 (Hard) – Recent Tulane graduate Dominik Koepfer advanced to his second quarterfinal in as many weeks with a come from behind three-set win over the No. 2 seed Mitchell Krueger. Koepfer trailed 6-4, 5-1 but he held 40/15, broke from 15/40, held from 40/15, and then fought off a match point to break in a three deuce game to even it at 5-5. Koepfer went ahead 6-5 after holding from 40/30 then he broke Krueger for a third straight time from 15/40 to take the second set 7-5. There were no breaks of serve in the third set and Koepfer raced out to a 6-1 lead in the tiebreak and ended up taking it 7-3.
