The draws for the US Open National Playoff were released today with Nick Meister (UCLA ’12) the top seed on the men’s side and Ayaka Okuno (semester at Georgia in 2013) is the top seed on the women’s side. The doubles draws should be out soon with singles getting underway on Friday in New Haven, CT. Below are the draws with Universal Tennis Ratings listed as of 8/19.
The participants for this year’s American Collegiate Invitational were release today. The tournament will take place during the second week of the US Open with the winner earning a wild card into the following year’s US Open if they meet certain criteria.
Coaching News:
Michael Woodson is the new men’s assistant at Baylor – Woodson, who is a 2012 Valparaiso graduate, had been on the coaching staff at Valpo for the last four years and he was promoted to an associate head coach before this past season. Woodson replaces Dominik Mueller who recently took over as the head coach at Old Dominion after spending the past five years as Matt Knoll’s assistant.
David Heckler is the new assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at UMKC – Heckler is a 2013 UMKC graduate who has been working as a tennis pro for the last few years in Phoenix and Houston.
Kieran Burke is the new women’s assistant coach at Colorado – Burke was a volunteer assistant at Vanderbilt last season and had spent the four year prior to that as an assistant at Boston College.
Ian Van Cott is the new men’s volunteer assistant at Princeton – Van Cott just graduated from Tulane this past May so this will be his first foray into the coaching world.
Scheduling News:
Princeton released it’s men’s schedule for the upcoming season and it’s a pretty stacked one – Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Rice, VCU, Denver, Buffalo, William & Mary, San Diego, Pepperdine, UCSB, plus a few more along with a tough Ivy League slate.
Oklahoma State released it’s women schedule with notable non-conference matches against Stanford, Florida, Washington, Northwestern, Arkansas, and Tulsa. Christopher Snodgress wrote a nice piece for SB Nation’s Cowboys Ride For Free about the Oklahoma State women’s program and head coach Chris Young so make sure you give it a read.
Florida released it’s women’s schedule with notable non-conference matches against USC, Pepperdine, Oklahoma State, Stanford,
Texas A&M released it’s women’s schedule with notable non-conference matches against Baylor, TCU, Rice, Princeton, and most likely Miami during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Facility News:
Division II powerhouse Armstrong State University had the ribbon cutting ceremony today on it’s brand new on-campus $1.5M 12-court facility. ASU has played at a facility off campus since 2010 but it’ll be back at home this fall.
Grand Canyon University will be building a new six-court on campus facility as part of a $1 billion expansion on campus.
