The top four seeds advanced to the singles semifinals in the Southwest in what will be an All-LA showdown between UCLA and USC while Cal Poly has put a pair of teams into the doubles semifinals. UNLV’s Jacob Amilon and Utah State’s Kai Wehnelt advanced to the singles final at the Mountain Regional while teams from Denver and Boise State will clash in the doubles final. The top five seeds in the Texas Regional advanced to the singles quarterfinals while the top three seeds advanced to the doubles semifinals. The Central Regional in Stillwater doesn’t have any seeds listed in its draws but the top four ranked singles players plowed into the quarterfinals with three of the eight remaining players from Oklahoma.
The top seed in the Midwest Regional went down when Northwestern’s Konrad Zieba was defaulted when trailing Michigan’s Myles Schalet 5-4 in the third set. I was watching the feed on FloTennis but looked away for a minute and missed what happened – my guess is he was DQd due to excess overrules (if anyone knows for sure let me know).
Two of the top three seeds withdrew in the Northeast Regional while Columbia leads the way with four guys in the Round of 16 including sophomore William Matheson who started the weekend in the qualifying draw.
Kentucky has two of the four semifinalists in the Ohio Valley Regional but Trey Yates and Beck Pennington will be underdogs on Sunday against Vanderbilt’s Daniel Valent and Memphis’s Ryan Peniston – well I should say underdogs on paper because both have put up some nice results this weekend.
Georgia is the only school with multiple guys in the Southeast Region quarterfinals with Wayne Montgomery, Walker Duncan, and Emil Reinberg still alive and kicking.
