Georgia Tech junior Chris Eubanks won his first-ever main draw Challenger match on Monday at the JSM Challenger of Champaign-Urbana and on Thursday he moved into the semifinals after Michael Mmoh withdrew with a left elbow strain. Eubanks entered the week with an ATP ranking of 937 but he’s now headed inside the top 650 with a chance to go even higher if he can get past the second seed Henri Laaksonen on Friday night.
Five of the eight guys remaining in the doubles semifinals have college ties with Dominik Koepfer (Tulane ’16) and Alex Lawson (Notre Dame ’16) set to meet Luke Bambridge and Liam Broady while Austin Krajicek (Texas A&M ’11) and Tennys Sandgren (Tennessee ’11) will face Hans Hach (Abilene Christian ’13) and Mitchell Krueger.
Longtime Tennessee women’s head coach Mike Patrick announced on Wednesday that he was stepping down after 30 seasons in Knoxville due to health reasons. The Tennessee release was pretty vague but the Knoxville News Sentinel had more details plus they conducted the below interview. It sounds like Alison Ojeda will be the interim head coach and Patrick thinks she’d be the perfect candidate to take over on a full time basis.
The Delray Beach Open will hold its ATP Wildcard Survivor Event starting on Saturday and finishing on Tuesday with the lucky winner earning a qualifying wild card into the February ATP event. 2015 Texas A&M Corpus Christi graduate Peter Nagy (ATP 415) will be the top seed with several current and former college guys in the draw. Edoardo Tessaro, who was a senior at Virginia Tech last season, won the wilcard last year.
The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals are taking place this week in London with John Peers (Baylor ’11) and his doubles partner Henri Kontinen guaranteed a spot in the semifinals after winning the Fleming/McEnroe group. Rajeev Ram (Illinois ’03*) and Raven Klaasen have a chance to finish second and qualify for the semifinals if they defeat Feliciano and Marc Lopez on Friday. Mike and Bob Bryan (Stanford ’98*) qualified for the semifinals after finishing second in the Edberg/Jarryd group.
Alex Rybakov (TCU Soph), Winston Lin (Columbia ’15), and Wil Spencer (Georgia ’12) are into the singles quarterfinals at the $10K Pensacola F37 Futures. Rybakov is defending 10 of his 28 ATP points after making the finals at this event a year ago.
