After putting out the college pro rankings over the last two days its time to get caught up on some news that took place over the last few days. We’ll start with in Knoxville where former Tennessee All-American Alison Ojeda was named as Tennessee’s new women’s head coach. Ojeda, who played at Tennessee from 1998 to 2002, replaces Mike Patrick who stepped down last week after 30 years on the job due to health reasons. Ojeda came back to Rocky Top in June as an assistant coach after spending the last six seasons at Baylor.
The Charlottesville Daily Progress reported that Virginia will be building a new 12-court outdoor facility at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The new facility which will also have a tennis building/clubhouse will cost between $10 million and $12 million with the funds being raised privately. Virginia has played outdoor matches on-campus at the 13-court Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center since 1997 but the uneven layout of five, five, and three courts hasn’t been the most ideal for spectators. The Boar’s Head Sports Club, which is located a few miles off-campus, currently has 12 indoor and 14 outdoor courts and in February will be hosting the ITA Men’s National Team Indoor Championships for the second consecutive year.
In other facility news Ole Miss will be starting construction on a new 6-court indoor center beside the track and field complex. In the past Ole Miss has been able to use the three indoor courts at the Gillom Sports Center but due to major renovations of the whole complex those courts will be unavailable this year.
Peter Nagy (Texas A&M Corpus Christi ’15) won a qualifying wild card into the ATP 250 in Delray Beach after winning a wild card tournament. Nagy only dropped two sets during the tournament – one to former top 100 ITF junior Augusto Laranja in the semifinals (1-6, 6-3, 10-7) and one to Ty Trombetta (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) in the finals. Full results are available at this link and the Delray Beach Open’s website also had a recap as well.
While most of the country will be partaking in turkey and gravy on Thursday there will be four second round singles matches taking place at the $75K Columbus (OH) Challenger. Ohio State commit John McNally will take on the third seed Henri Laaksonen, Peter Kobelt (Ohio State ’14) will meet the fifth seed Mitchell Krueger, Cameron Norrie (TCU Jr) faces lucky loser Luke Bambridge, and Tennys Sandgren (Tennessee ’11*) faces Eric Quigley (Kentucky ’12). McNally won his first-career main draw Challenger match on Tuesday when he picked up 8 ATP points in a straight set win over Ohio State senior Herkko Pollanen.

Ojeda played at Tennessee from 98-02….not 08-12 like your article says. Just a heads up in case you want to correct it. Thanks
Yep wrong decade – thanks for the correction
