Virginia commit Matthew Lord is still alive in both the singles and doubles draws as are Trey Hilderbrand and Chelsea Kung with both of the latter still uncommitted. Dragos Ignat (13.92), who played in the upper half of Columbia’s lineup for three years before departing this past season, won $800 after routing the competition at the USTA Midwest Indoor Championships in Plain City, Ohio. Ignat dropped just eight games in five matches with his closest match coming in the finals in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ohio State junior Matt Mendez (13.23).
Ohio State senior Sandy Niehaus (10.56) won the women’s singles title with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 win over the top seed Maddie Kobelt (10.78/Syracuse ’14). Niehaus won her opening round match 6-1, 6-0 over Wright State sophomore Taylor Culbertson (7.88) and then she knocked off the second seed Dalayna Hewitt (10.86/HS Class of ’19) 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in the semifinals.
Maddie Kobelt and Meghan Buell (Washington & Lee ’15) won the women’s doubles title 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 over Rachael Morales (Marshall Sr) and Stephanie Smith (Marshall Jr) while Kobelt’s younger brother Alex (Ohio State soph) and Matt Mendez won the men’s doubles title 6-2, 7-6 over Kevin Metka (Ohio St ’15) and Gabe Higgs/Horwell (Allegheny ’03).
