The John Roddick era is officially underway at Central Florida and it’s off to a great start after the Knights upset No. 23 Texas Tech 4-3. The Red Raiders started off the day at the brand new Home of the USTA by blanking New Mexico 4-0 and then in the second half of the doubleheader against UCF they got off to a good start after capturing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. UCF rebounded in singles by taking four first sets with three of them coming in tiebreaks. Texas Tech’s Bjorn Thomson made it 2-0 with a quick win at No. 4 but Central Florida evened it up at 2-2 when Chris Barrus and Alabama transfer Danny Kerznerman won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6. Barrus’s win at No. 5 came over the ITA’s No. 2 Freshman/Newcomer Ronit Bisht. Texas Tech retook the lead when Alex Sendegeya won in straight sets at No. 3 over Virginia transfer Harrison Richmond but Central Florida was still looking good at No. 1 and No. 2

UCF’s Korey Lovett, who transferred in from Alabama, would even it at 3-3 after breaking Jolan Cailleau on the deciding point to win 7-6(9), 6-4 so it all came down to No. 2. UCF’s Kalman Boyd, who transferred in from USC, took the opening set over Connor Curry and was on serve up 5-4 in the second. Curry went up 15/0 with an overhead put away but then he netted a backhand to make it 15-all. Curry netted another backhand to make it 15/30 and then after a forehand found the net he was in a 15/40 hole. Boyd closed it out on the next point after another Curry unforced error and the celebration was on – here was the live stream of Curry’s final service game.

“I think the biggest thing this win does is give us belief, if you do the right things, word hard and focus on execution you give yourself a better chance to win,” said head coach John Roddick. “I think today, from a coaching perspective, is a valuable lesson because they will believe what we have been saying. The bottom line is the effort that they put in, to not go away and to win three tiebreakers after dropping the doubles point, it’s heart. It’s something you can’t teach.”

“This win gave us a ton of confidence because we knew we could all come out here and win if we executed our game plans,” said Lovett. “We’ve been working really hard at practice. I think everyone was really excited to get out there and everyone took advantage of the opportunity.”

Georgia Tech and Illinois had the upper hand on Saturday in singles action at the MLK Invitational in Atlanta as the Jackets took 6 of 10 from Columbia and Illinois took four of seven from Georgia.

Georgia Tech head coach Kenny Thorne says: “Across the board, I told the guys, that we came out and played the way we need to play in singles. Everybody I felt like was in their matches. That’s what you want to get out of this tournament, some close matches, put the guys under pressure and I think we responded pretty well. Columbia is a good team; they’re a top-25 team so it was a good result.”

“I thought today was a very good day,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. “I saw some great matchups and some great opportunities for our guys. I’m seeing a lot of progress. Wayne and Robert did a great job of taking care of business. Overall, I thought it was a good first day, and hopefully our guys can bounce back tomorrow.”
