The second day of the 2017 Men’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships brought us two thrilling main draw matches and two that were over shortly after they started. All four semifinalists were top five seeds with three hailing from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the fourth comes from the Big Ten.

We’ll start off with one of the two thrillers as the No. 4 seed California took on the No. 5 seed North Carolina. At last year’s NTIs, North Carolina made a habit of winning matches after dropping the doubles point and it seems like that tradition has continued this year. Cal jumped out to early break leads on all three courts with Andre Goransson and Billy Griffith breaking on the no-ad point to go up 3-1 at No. 2, Bjorn Hoffmann and JT Nishimura breaking at love to go up 3-2 at No. 3, and Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat breaking to go up 4-2 at No. 1.

Bergevi and Lakat would finish first at No. 1 with Lakat hitting an ace down the T on the 40/30 point to win it 6-4. North Carolina actually called the serve out but when Cal appealed the call the chair overturned it to make the result official. North Carolina’s Blaine Boyden and Simon Soendergaard got their match at No. 3 back on serve at 4-4 however Cal would break back to go up 5-4. Cal’s Goransson and Griffith would maintain their early break lead at No. 2 and Griffith would serve it out from 40/30 with a service winner to give Cal the doubles point with a 6-3 win.

The match at No. 3 went unfinished with Cal’s Bjorn Hoffmann serving 5-4 (40/40) – Hoffmann and Nishimura thought they won it on the 40/30 point but their out call on a shot on the baseline was overruled by the chair. Hoffmann missed his first serve on the 40/40 point and before he could serve up his second serve Cal clinched.

North Carolina dropped the doubles point on Friday against Georgia and responded by winning four first sets in singles but today they two-upped themselves by sweeping all six first sets. North Carolina freshman Simon Soendergaard put the Tar Heels on the board with a straight set win over Filip Bergevi at No. 3. Soendergaard broke Bergevi to go up 5-4 in the first and then he held on the no-ad point after hitting a sensational half-volley to take the set 6-4. Soendergaard broke Bergevi on the no-ad point to go up 2-1 and then he held on the no-ad point for 3-1. Soendergaard broke again and held for 5-1 and then after a Bergevi hold he’d serve it out to win it 6-4, 6-2.

North Carolina sophomore Bo Boyden put the Tar Heels ahead 2-1 with a straight set win over Connor Heap at No. 6. Boyden broke Heap’s opening service game on the no-ad point to go ahead 1-0 and he’d add another break to go up 4-1. After an exchange of holds, Boyden would hit an ace on the no-ad point to close out the first set 6-2. The second set stayed on serve until deep in the set with Heap holding on the no-ad point for 5-4 and then Boyden came back from 15/40 down to hold for 5-5. Boyden would snag the lone break of the set when he hit a crosscourt backhand winner on the no-ad point to go up 6-5. Heap had a chance to go up 0/30 on Boyden’s 6-5 service game but he hit an overhead from point blank range into the net to make it 15-all. Boyden went up 30/15 after Heap played a shot that looked a foot out and then he went up 40/15 with a service winner. Heap hit a backhand winner to make it 40/30 and then Boyden netted a forehand to bring up the no-ad point. Boyden closed it out with an ace down the T to come away with a 6-2, 7-5 win.

North Carolina had the lead but Cal had earned splits on each of the other four courts and Andre Goransson was nearing the finish line at No. 2. Goransson dropped the opening set 6-2 to first-semester freshman William Blumberg but he’d race out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and force a third set with a 6-2 set of his own. Goransson kept the momentum going in the third and went up 5-0 before Blumberg held and broke to make it 5-2. Goransson would break back from 30/40 with a forehand winner down the line to win it 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The match was tied at 2-2 and it looked like Cal was about to put another point on the board with Florian Lakat serving up 4-1 in the third at No. 1 however Ronnie Schneider would hang in there and take one of the breaks back and then hold for 3-4.

While Schneider was rallying at No. 1, fellow senior Jack Murray was nearing the finish line at No. 5 after he broke Cal freshman Bjorn Hoffmann on the no-ad point to go up 4-3 in the third. Murray had just broke Hoffmann two games earlier to go up 3-2 but Hoffmann immediately broke back to even it at 3-all. Murray held to go up 5-3 but Hoffmann would hold and then hit a forehand winner to break from 30/40 to even it at 5-all. Murray broke back from 15/40 when Hoffmann netted a forehand and then Murray served it out from 40/15 to win it 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Meanwhile back at No. 1, Ronnie Schneider had come all the way back from two breaks down to even it at 4-4, after Lakat just missed a forehand on the 30/40 point, and then Schneider held to go ahead 5-4. While many people were watching that court, UNC junior Robert Kelly was pulling away from Cal’s Billy Griffith at No. 4. After Kelly took the first set 6-4, Griffith broke on the no-ad point to take the second 6-4. Kelly broke Griffith on the no-ad point to go ahead 1-0 in the third and then he’d break on another no-ad point to make it 4-1. Kelly came back from 30/40 down to hold on the no-ad point for 5-1 and then Griffith fought off a match point to hold on the no-ad point for 2-5. Kelly would serve it out from 40/30 with a forehand winner and with that the North Carolina was headed back to the NTI semifinals for the second year in a row.

The match at No. 1 was halted with Lakat leading Schneider 4-1 in the tiebreak however you’ve got to watch the clip from FloTennis of the opening point of the tiebreak – it made SportsCenter’s Top 10!

Post-Match Quotes from Cal’s recap
“Give credit to North Carolina for coming out with purpose after losing the doubles point,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “They certainly put us on our heels by winning six first sets in singles. I think we did a very good job of fighting to get back into the match, but it wasn’t enough today.”

“We knew we’d eventually lose a match, but this one got away from us, so there is plenty go be gained,” Wright said. “Everyone talks about our seniors, but remember two out of our six singles players today are freshmen and are learning on the job. As a team, we’ll take this experience and benefit from it later in the season.”

North Carolina will next face Virginia in the semifinals after the Cavaliers hammered UCLA 4-0 in the quickest match of the weekend. Virginia’s Collin Altamirano and JC Aragone jumped out to a 5-0 lead at No. 3 doubles in route to a 6-1 win and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Alex Ritschard would clinch the doubles point after Kwiatkowski served it out from 40/15 to win 6-3.

Virginia took five of six first sets in singles and Kwiatkowski, Aragone, and Henrik Wiersholm would each cruise in straight sets with Kwiatkowski clinching the team win at No. 2. The match only took 1 hour and 40 minutes which beat the Ohio State/Oklahoma State match by 3 minutes.

Post-Match Quotes from Virginia’s recap
“I thought that the difference today was that we came out with an incredible amount of energy in doubles,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We executed really well and played with a lot of aggression, which made the difference for us in the doubles point. I believe we got off to a great start across the board in singles and the level of focus and energy we played with today was necessary against a great UCLA team. We will continue with that kind of focus tomorrow and really bring it. We know that North Carolina will do that as well. We have played them a number of times and we are really looking forward to doing it again.”

The longest match of the day took place in the noon window between the second seed Wake Forest and the tenth seed Texas. The Longhorns got off to a good start at No. 3 with Christian Sigsgaard and Julian Zlobinsky breaking Wake to go up 4-2 and two holds later they’d win it 6-3. The matches at No. 1 and No. 2 seemed destined to go to tiebreaks however the ITA No. 1 team of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim were doing their best to keep that from happening. Mansouri came back from 30/40 down to hold for 6-5, after hitting a second-serve ace on the no-ad point, and then the Wake duo would break George Goldhoff on the no-ad point to win it 7-5. The match at No. 2 would go to a tiebreak and it’d be all Wake as Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev jumped out to a 4-1* lead and would close it out 7-2.

Texas rebounded in singles and took four opening sets but Wake would be the team to put up the next two points. Wake Forest junior Skander Mansouri puts the Deacs up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Texas senior George Goldhoff in a match that took right at one hour.

Just as Mansouri won his match it looked like first-semester freshman Borna Gojo was going to follow suit because he had a pair of match points while serving up 6-3, 5-2 against Texas sophomore Harrison Scott at No. 3. Gojo netted a backhand to bring up the no-ad point and then Scott earned the break with a swinging volley winner from the service line. Scott held for 4-5 and then after Gojo fell behind 30/40 he’d hit an ace out wide to bring up his third match point (Scott called the serve out and was overruled). On the no-ad point Gojo had an opportunity to finish it off with a volley into the open court however he didn’t put enough on it and Scott came flying across the court to hit a running forehand winner down the line to break for 5-5. Scott held for 6-5 and then he’d break Gojo on the no-ad point for the third time in a row to take the second set 7-5.

With Gojo unable to finish in straight sets, Wake’s next point would come at No. 1 singles as the ITA No. 1 ranked Petros Chrysochos would came back from a set down to defeat No. 5 Christian Sigsgaard in three sets. Sigsgaard took the opening set 6-3 but Chrysochos would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second. Sigsgaard held, broke, and held again to pull within 3-4 but Chrysochos held two more times to take the set 6-4. The third set only took about 20 minutes with Chrysochos pulling away to win it 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Wake’s lead was up to 3-0 but finding that fourth point wasn’t going to be easy. Moments after Chrysochos won at No. 1, Texas freshman Yuya Ito would put the Horns on the board with a tight straight set win over Christian Seraphim at No. 4. Ito served for the first set up 5-4 but Seraphim broke back and forced a tiebreak. Ito didn’t have any issues in the tiebreak and closed it out 7-2. The second set stayed on serve all the way up until the tiebreak though Ito came close to breaking Seraphim’s 5-6 service game but the big man came back from 15/40 down to hold. Seraphim went up 5-2 in the tiebreak but Ito won both points on his own serve to pull within 4-5. Seraphim would double fault on back-to-back points to go down 5-6 but he’d even it at 6-6 after hitting a nice angled backhand that Ito couldn’t quite reach. Ito went up 7-6 after Seraphim netted a forehand but Seraphim evened it at 7-all with a volley winner at the net. Ito went up a mini-break at 8-7 after Seraphim netted a forehand about 10 shots into the rally and then Ito closed it out 9-7 with an overhead winner

Texas’s Harrison Scott would trim the Wake lead to 3-2 after he put Borna Gojo away in the third set. As I mentioned above, Scott finished the second set by winning the last five games and he’d continue that hot streak in the third set by winning the first three to go up 3-0. Gojo stopped the bleeding with a hold and then he’d break to put it back on serve at 2-3. Scott would break back on the no-ad point when he hit a backhand winner up the line and then he’d hold for 5-2. Scott would break Gojo from 30/40 to close out a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win in a match where he trailed 3-6, 2-5* (30/40).

Second later the match would be tied at 3-all because Texas redshirt freshman Leo Telles would hit a forehand winner to break Dennis Uspensky from 30/40 to win it 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

All eyes turned to No. 6 singles where Wake Forest redshirt freshman Alan Gadjiev and Texas sophomore Rodrigo Banzer were in the early stages of the third set. Banzer took the opening set 6-4 but a break-free second set ended with Gadjiev taking the tiebreak 7-1. Banzer held on the no-ad point to start the third set but Gadjiev countered with a hold from 40/30. Gadjiev broke from 15/40 to go up 3-2 and then after going up 40/30 he had a volley putaway at the net but instead of going into the open court he hit it right at Banzer who was standing on the sideline and Banzer reflexed it back for a lob winner. On the no-ad point Banzer ripped a nice service return and then he followed his shot to the net and finished with a volley winner for the break. Banzer held at love for 4-3 but Gadjiev countered with a hold from 40/15 to even it at 4-all. Gadjiev would break from 15/40 after using some great hustle to run down a drop shot which after reaching he lobbed Banzer and then finished with an overhead winner. Gadjiev quickly went up 40/15 and then he put a volley away to take it 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4.

The first quarterfinal of the day was an all-OSU showdown as the third seed Ohio State took on the eleventh seed Oklahoma State. Ohio State took a quick break lead at No. 2 doubles while Oklahoma State did the same at No. 3. Ohio State’s Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo would add a second break at No. 2 and would close out Jurence Mendoza and Lucas Gerch 6-2. It looked like the match at No. 1 would be the decider because Oklahoma State’s No. 3 team of Lukas Finzelberg and Artur Dubinski jumped out to a 5-1 lead however Ohio State’s Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert would win the final six games of the match to take it 7-5.

Ohio State picked up three quick first sets from Mikael Torpegaard, Hugo Di Feo, and Herkko Pollanen and each would win in convincing fashion with Pollanen clinching it at No. 4. The win was head coach Ty Tucker’s 500th career win at Ohio State and it was probably one of the quickest with the match taking just 1 hour and 43 minutes.

Baylor won a hard fought doubles point over Georgia and then picked up singles wins from Juan Benitez, Max Tchoutakian, and Johannes Schretter to get a 4-2 win.

During doubles play, Georgia’s Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb won the final five games of the match to pick up a 6-2 win at No. 1. The match at No. 2 stayed on serve until Baylor’s Juan Benitez and Constantin Frantzen broke Walker Duncan’s 4-4 service game to go ahead 5-4. Frantzen would go up 30/0 but he’d double fault on two of the next three points to find himself facing two break points at 30/40. Frantzen hit a service winner to bring up the no-ad point and as he got ready to serve it up his teammate Jimmy Bendeck was also serving at 5-4 (40/40) at No. 3. The two no-ad points started and finished at almost the same time with Frantzen/Benitez winning at No. 2 and then Bendeck and Will Little won at No. 3 after Little hit an overhead winner to close it out.

Each team won three first sets in singles and four of those six matches would finish in straight sets. Johannes Schretter jumped on Nathan Ponwith in both sets to win 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 but Georgia would tie it up at 2-2 after Walker Duncan and Robert Loeb won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6. Max Tchoutakian made it 3-2 Baylor with a straight set win at No. 2 and then Juan Benitez clinched the match by breaking Wayne Montgomery from 30/40 to win 6-7, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1.

The match at No. 4 went unfinished with Baylor’s Jimmy Bendeck up a break in the third at 2-1.

2. Gojo/Gadjiev (WF) vs. #25 Joyce/Di Feo (OSU)
3. Chrysochos/Uspensky (WF) vs. Mendez/Tubert (OSU)

Wake Forest was on the court for twice as long as Ohio State and you have to wonder if fatigue will play a role in this one. Both teams play doubles extremely well but I think Ohio State takes the point and grabs the early 1-0 lead. Petros Chrysochos beat Mikael Torpegaard in straight sets back in October at the All-Americans but I think Torpegaard is going to get it done indoors. I like Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim for Wake but I’ll take JJ Wolf, Martin Joyce, and Kyle Seelig for the Buckeyes. Prediction: Ohio State 4-2

Even though Virginia has been playing solid doubles lately I’m going to take North Carolina to grab the early lead. I like Ronnie Schneider and Robert Kelly in singles but I think Kwiatkowski, Soderlund, Ritschard, and Wiersholm will get it done for Virginia.  Prediction: Virginia 4-2
