A day after USC lost a tough one at Stanford it rebounded and posted a 4-0 shutout over No. 12 Cal. USC’s No. 3 team of Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede broke for a 4-3 lead and they’d close it out a few games later for a 6-4 win. Cal picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles after Andre Goransson and Billy Griffith came back from a break down to win the final three games. The decider was at No. 1 between a pair of top 10 doubles teams. After 10 consecutive holds, USC’s Brandon Holt and Riley Smith broke Cal’s Florian Lakat and Filip Bergevi to go up 6-5 and then they’d serve it out to win it 7-5.

Cal came back strong in singles and took four opening sets but USC’s Logan Smith and Thibault Forget each closed out their matches in straight sets to make it 3-0. Cal was a game away from wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 but USC’s Jack Jaede got the clincher at No. 4 after coming back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 over Filip Bergevi. Each of the remaining matches were abandoned so the final stood at 4-0.

Post-Match Quotes from Cal’s recap
“USC played a solid match today and deserved to win,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “We’re getting close to playing at our postseason level, but we clearly have some work to do. The good news is we’re getting healthy. Our focus is to get sharper with each match we play, and I think we have a long enough runway to be at our best in May.”

For the last few days I’ve been in Seattle attending the WAC Cluster and after a pair of shutouts on Friday the action really picked up on Saturday. The first match of the day was a rematch from last year’s conference tournament final with New Mexico State taking on UMKC. UMKC grabbed the doubles point to take the early lead but New Mexico State came back in singles and picked up straight set wins from Christofer Goncalves, Stijn de Haan, and Sergi Espias at 1, 3, and 4. UMKC came back to tie it up after getting a three-set win from Uldis Gaismins at No. 2 and a straight set win from Mike Psarros at No. 5.

The last match to go on court, with only four courts available, would be the decider. UMKC’s Daniel Izadifar opened up a single-break 3-0 lead to start the match but NMSU’s Mauri Benitez held and broke for 3-2. It stayed on serve until Benitez broke on the no-ad point for 6-5 and then he served out the set to take it 7-5. In the second set, Benitez broke for 3-2 but Izadifar would break back and hold for 4-3. The set ended up going to a tiebreak and after falling behind 3-1, NMSU’s Benitez would take five straight to go up 6-3. Benitez dropped both points on his serve to make it 6-5 but then he won it on the next point when Izadifar netted a forehand.

New Mexico State has now defeated UMKC by the same 4-3 score in the last four matches.

Chicago State picked up its first conference win of the year with a 4-3 win over Seattle. Chicago State grabbed the doubles point after Jiri Nouza and Felix Savard came back from 4-1 down in the tiebreak to win 11-9. Nouza and Savard also fought off match points at 7-6 and 9-8.

Roughly 40 minutes into singles, play was halted due to rain so they went indoors to finish the match on the four available indoor courts. The indoor facility actually has eight courts but the other four were already reserved for a junior tournament.

Seattle took its first lead of the day after Arshak Ghazaryan and Jeremiah Kalmus won at 1 and 4 but Chicago State went back up 3-2 after Felix Savard and Gonzalo Martinez won at 2 and 3. Seattle tied it up with a win from Adrian Sanabria at 6 so the match would be decided at No. 5. Chicago State’s Christian Gonzalez rolled through the first set outdoors but once it went indoors Seattle’s Alex Chan got back in it and took the second set 7-5. Gonzalez went up 4-1 in the third but Chan held, broke, and held to even it at 4-4. Gonzalez held from 40/30 to go up 5-4 and then Chan went up 40/30 on his serve but a forehand winner by Gonazlez and a forehand error by Chan gave Chicago State the 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win.

Post-Match Quotes from SU’s recap
“Today was a wild match as we started outdoors and then had to finish indoors due to the weather,” said head coach Adam Reeb  “Our guys showed a lot of heart and emptied the tank out there today. I wish they could have gotten the win as I know how much they put in today and care about our team, but it wasn’t meant to be.

If we can keep putting in this type of effort, I know we’ll be rewarded with success in conference action. We’ve just got to keep fighting and believing.

Thank you to all our supporters who came out and watched today it was a fun environment to play in.”

The final match of the day, which was played indoors despite outdoor temperatures in the mid 50s, saw Grand Canyon pull away to defeat UTRGV 7-0. Grand Canyon took the doubles point but then each team took two first sets on the four available courts. Grand Canyon’s Mathieu Rajonah went down a break to start his match at No. 2 but then he proceeded to win 12 of the next 14 games to win 6-1, 6-2. Francois Musitelli made it 3-0 with a straight set win at No. 1 and then Lorenzo Fucile clinched it with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3.

Post-Match Quotes from GCU’s recap
“The men had a very strong win this evening against Texas Rio Grande.” Said GCU head coach Greg Prudhomme. “The 7-0 score doesn’t show the competitiveness we had on a number of different courts. Rio Grande put up a good fight.”

“We got off to a great early lead in the dubs” Purdhomme stated. “The guys got on top and stayed on top with the exception of courts 3 and 4, we did go down a set in the singles but the guys did a great job of staying in it and battling back.”

Purdhomme addressed the strong finish by stating, “Guys are showing really good form. We are certainly looking forward to being able to play the conference tournament at the end of next season because we have been able to get our guys playing at a high level by the end of the season when it really counts.”

“We are happy with today’s performance, it was a great team effort, everybody looked sharp and they are looking forward to getting out there and trying to finish strong with one last match tomorrow.”
