It was just one week ago at the Portugal F8 Futures in Lisbon that Joao Monteiro (Va Tech ’16) won the singles title with a close three set win over Nuno Borges (Miss St Rising Jr) so when they met again today in the finals of the $15K Portugal F9 in Setubal most were expecting another close battle. However if you showed up an hour after it started all you got to see was the trophy ceremony because Borges exacted some revenge with a quick 6-3, 6-0 win in a match that only took 57 minutes. Borges won 73% of the points on his first serve and held all eight times while breaking Monteiro four times. The singles title was the first of Borges’s career and it also gave him three titles in the last two weeks with him also winning the doubles title at the Portugal F8 and F9.
Alex Sarkissian (Pepperdine ’14) won his second title of the year, sixth career, with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Filip Peliwo in the finals of the $25K Canada F3 Futures in Kelowna. Sarkissian won 80% of the points on his first serve and was only broke once while he broke Peliwo four times.
Sanaz Marand (North Carolina ’10) won her second career singles title on Sunday with a 6-1, 6-4 win over the top seed Ayla Aksu in the finals of the ITF $15K in Istanbul, Turkey. Marand won 75% of the points on Aksu’s second serve and broke her five times. Marand’s only other singles title came in El Paso back in 2013. Marand also won the doubles title this week with Melis Sezer.

Eudice Chong (Wesleyan Rising Sr) made it all the way to the finals of the ITF $15K in Anning, China, but she came up short falling in straight sets to Shanshan Guo (WTA 641). Chong broke for 4-3 in the first but Guo broke back in a one-deuce, held in a three-deuce game, and broke in a one-deuce game to take the opening set. Chong went up a break to start the second set but Guo broke back in the next game. Chong had a break point to go up 5-4 but Guo fought it off and held and then Guo broke from 15/40 to close it out 6-4, 6-4.
Nathan Pasha (Georgia ’15) came close to winning his first professional singles title at the $15K USA F22 Futures in Pittsburgh but he just couldn’t get over the hump and fell in three sets to Kaichi Uchida (ATP 490). Pasha took the opening set 6-3 and then in the second set he went up 0/40 on Uchida’s 4-4 service game. Uchida won the next five points to hold but then Pasha held easily for 5-5. Pasha had five break points in Uchida’s 5-5 service game but once again Uchida fought his way back to get the hold. After Pasha held for 6-6, he jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the tiebreak but Uchida won five straight points and went on to take it 7-5 which forced a deciding third set. Pasha went up 2-0 in the third and had game point for 3-0 but Uchida broke and then held for 2-2. It stayed on serve until Uchida broke Pasha in a one-deuce game for 5-4 and then he served it out from 40/15 to win 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Nicole Gibbs (Stanford ’13*) was looking to win a singles title for the second week in a row but she went down 6-3, 6-2 to Japan’s Miharu Imanishi (WTA 330) in the final of the ITF $25K in Auburn, Alabama.
