World University GamesIt’ll be a busy week for many current and former collegians as they try to qualify for the 2017 US Open. There are 26 players with college ties in the men’s qualifying draw with two first round matches pitting one against another. There are 10 players with college ties in the women’s draw with the only college versus college match coming when Francesca Di Lorenzo faces Nicole Gibbs. The World University Games are underway in Taiwan with plenty of representation from college tennis players here in the United States. The draws, which are a little tricky to find, are available at this link (click Sport Reports) plus you can get full stats from each match by going through the list of results. UCLA Martin Redlicki, Florida State’s Lucas Poullain, Baylor’s Jimmy Bendeck, Old Dominion’s Adam Moundir, and former UNC Tar Heel Esben Hess-Olesen have each advanced to the third round of the men’s draw with the top half to be played late Monday night/early Tuesday morning in the US. Astra Sharma (Vanderbilt Senior) won her second singles title in the last month after defeating Vendula Zovincova (WTA 748) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the ITF $15K in Graz, Austria. Sharma won her opening round matches comfortably but was pushed in the next three with a pair of close wins over the Pantuckova sisters before winning the final of Zovincova. Sharma currently has a WTA ranking of 660, which is a career high, plus she is now 23-5 this summer on the pro circuit. Sharma will have a new career high ranking of around 575 when these 12 points are added in next week.
Marta Lesniak (SMU ’12) won her third singles title of the year, fifth career, by extending her winning streak to 10 with a come from behind 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Jade Suvrijn (WTA 557) at the ITF $15K in Mragowo, Poland. Lesniak only dropped a combined 11 games in her first four matches and despite dropping a set in the final she has won eight of her last ten in straight sets. Lesniak’s current WTA ranking is 677 and when these 12 points are added in next week she’ll be around 585 (career high is 445).
