The opening round of qualifying at the US Open wrapped up on Wednesday with the guys with college ties going 12-14 while the girls went 5-5. UCLA and USC were the only schools to put more than one player through to the men’s second round while on the women’s side Stanford was the only school to do the same. Those that played college tennis last season went 2-4 with Cameron Norrie and JC Aragone picking up wins while JJ Wolf, William Blumberg, Francesca Di Lorenzo, and Ashley Lahey came up short. There are plenty of familiar names remaining in the men’s singles draw at the World University Games. Jason Jung, who graduated from Michigan in 2011 though is eligible for the WUG due to recently taking classes at the National Changhua University of Education, has the highest ATP ranking (271) and is the top overall seed. Jung’s half of the draw has four other current college players with Texas’s Yuya Ito set to meet UCLA’s Logan Staggs while Mississippi State’s Nuno Borges will play Columbia’s Jackie Tang. The only remaining US college players in the bottom half of the draw are UCLA’s Martin Redlicki and Florida State’s Lucas Poullain.
