World University GamesThe World University Games wrapped up on Monday in Taiwan with several U.S. college players bringing home medals. Jason Jung, who was born in Torrance (Calif) and played at Michigan from 2007 to 2011, won the gold medal in singles after not dropping a set during the whole competition. Jung was representing Chinese Taipei and even though he graduated from Michigan in 2011 he was eligible since is enrolled at a university in Taiwan.
Mississippi State rising junior Nuno Borges won the bronze medal in men’s singles after making it to the semifinals before falling to Jung 6-3, 6-3. Borges defeated current U.S. collegians Jackie Tang (Columbia) and Yuya Ito (Texas) on his way to the semifinals.
Jack Findel-Hawkins (North Florida ’17) and Luke Johnson (Clemson ’16) picked up a silver medal for Great Britain after a narrow 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 loss to Russia’s Richard Muzaev and Aslan Karatsev in the gold medal match. Findel-Hawkins and Johnson ousted the top seeds in the quarterfinals and didn’t drop a set until the finals.
Simona Parajova, who played at TCU from 2011 to 2015, won the silver medal in mixed doubles with Ivan Kosec. The duo from Slovakia fell in the gold medal match to Japan’s Erina Hayashi and Kaito Uesugi 7-5, 6-4. Parajova was eligible to play in the games due to her being enrolled at Durham University in England.
UCLA’s Logan Staggs and Jada Hart picked up the bronze medal in mixed doubles after falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 to Slovakia’s Ivan Kosec and Simona Parajova. The Bruin duo knocked out the No. 2 seed in the second round and the No. 6 seed in the quarterfinals.
LaSalle University named
Chad Hamilton as its new men’s and women’s head coach. Hamilton graduated from Howard University in 2000 and has most recently been a lead pro at high performance academy in Philadelphia. Hamilton replaces Josh Schofield who was recently named the men’s and women’s head coach at Franklin & Marshall.
Wagner College named
Shem Filipek as its new men’s head coach. Filipek recently graduated from Monmouth University after playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles over the last four years. Filipek replaces Jason Sinkoff who departed after two years to become the assistant men’s coach at James Madison. The head coaching position at Wagner turns over every two years while the coach also works on his/her masters.
Ruth Seaborne was named the women’s assistant at UMass replacing Juancarlos Nunez who was promoted to head coach after Judy Dixon retired.
Alex Emery was named the men’s and women’s assistant at Drake replacing Paul Gibbs.
Mark Booras was promoted to the Director of Tennis at Tulane.
Shayann Vaezzadeh was named the women’s assistant at Pitt replacing Taylor Washington.
Santiago Lobelo was named the women’s assistant at Houston replacing Jason Potthoff who is now the women’s head coach at UW-Milwaukee.
Carlos DiLaura was named the men’s assistant at Utah State replacing Ben Mulls who took the men’s assistant position at Pepperdine.
Melissa Kopinski was named the women’s assistant at Illinois replacing Kelly Cameron who took the women’s assistant position at Davidson.
