The opening day of the Oracle ITA Masters is in the books with almost all the favorites cruising into the second round. 15 of the top 16 seeds advanced on both the men’s and women’s side with both of the No. 16 seeds falling to the No. 17 seed. The player with the higher UTR won 31 of 32 matches with East Carolina’s Celia Ruiz the only “underdog” to come out on top. The women’s top seed UCLA’s Ena Shibahara won her match 6-1, 6-1 over Quinnipiac’s Jennifer Lu while the men’s top seed Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos faced more resistance in his 6-2, 7-5 win over Bryant’s Matt Kuhar.

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic got underway on Thursday with two rounds of men’s qualifying. Arkansas senior Jose Salazar, who has the highest ITA ranking and UTR in the field, had to go through qualies since he wasn’t able to sign up early while waiting to see if the NCAA would clear him for another year of eligibility. Salazar did manage to qualify after only dropping eight games in his two wins so he joins Nebraska’s Toby Boyer and Micah Klousia, and DePaul’s Boris Spaanjaard as the four qualifiers.
The top four seeds in the main draw are Iowa’s Josh Silverstein, Minnesota’s Felix Corwin, Wisconsin’s Lamar Remy, and Virginia Tech’s Mitch Harper. The top four seeds in the women’s draw are Miami’s Sinead Lohan, Arkansas’s Ana Oparenovic, North Texas’s Maria Kononova, and Syracuse’s Miranda Ramirez.
The winner gets a main draw wild card into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championship in Indian Wells in early November. I have the draws broken down by UTR in my fall hub which is available to all College Tennis Today subscribers.

In addition to the above mentioned tournaments there are another 35 taking place this weekend so if you want to avoid sifting through multiple websites to find draws I’d highly recommend signing up for a monthly subscription to College Tennis Today. My Fall Tournament Hub has links to every tournament and I’ll do my best to keep them updated throughout the weekend.
