We knew it was coming but we just didn’t know where and when it’d happen. I’m of course referring to a seeded team going down before the Sweet 16 which after yesterday has now occurred every year on the men’s side since the field was expanded in 1999 and in 19 of the last 20 years on the women’s side.
We’ll start with the women which wrapped up all 16 regionals on Saturday. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane had been knocking on the door for the last several years but after 11 straight NCAA appearances that ended in the first or second round they busted through to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history with a 4-2 win in Stillwater over No. 8 seed Oklahoma State.
Tulsa grabbed the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point for the 23rd time in 28 matches with a 6-2 win at No. 3 and a 6-4 win at No. 1. The teams split first sets in singles but Tulsa’s lead quickly grew to 2-0 after Shura Poppe won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles which came a day after she won her match against LSU 6-1, 6-0. Oklahoma State won the next two matches to finish at No. 3 and No. 4 but Tulsa regained the lead after Vera Ploner won 6-4, 7-6(5) at No. 5.
Both of the remaining matches went to third sets but it didn’t take long for Tulsa sophomore Martina Okalova to pull away from Megan McCray and clinch the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win.

Coming into the 2017-18 season the Florida State Seminoles were just 1-56 all-time against state-rival Florida so if you would have told Nole fans they’d not only beat Florida once but twice you would have gotten some strange looks. Well it happened yesterday with Florida State defeating Florida for the second time this season to clinch its second-ever berth in the Sweet 16 with a 4-3 win in a back and forth match in Gainesville. The loss by Florida means the Gators will miss the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004.
FSU won the doubles point for the 21st time in 28 matches with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 but Florida came back in singles and claimed four opening sets. The Gators closed out three of those in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead but the Seminoles wouldn’t go away.
FSU senior Gabriella Castaneda trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 and then in the blink of an eye the match was tied at 3-3 after sophomore Nandini Das won via a third set retirement by Florida’s McCartney Kessler. Kessler began cramping midway through the second set, due to the extreme heat, but while serving at 1-1 in the third she couldn’t continue and had to default her match.
The final match left on court at No. 6 was nearing the finish line with FSU sophomore Andrea Garcia leading UF freshman Katie Kubicz 5-4 in the third. Garcia had opened up a 3-1 lead earlier in the set before Kubicz reeled off three straight games, two of which were breaks, to go in front 4-3. After Garcia broke back she then fought off two break points to hold for 5-4. Garcia would break from 30/40, after a Kubicz backhand just missed the mark, to close out the win.
Note – Garcia also clinched FSU’s regular season win over UF with a win at No. 6 over Kubicz.

Quotes from Roland Thornqvist via UF’s recap:
“I have a lot of thoughts. First, I must say that Florida State played a fantastic match and obviously we have to congratulate them. I thought we had a huge task today because they are good on all six courts. They’re good in doubles. I knew that there was going to be small, small margins that decided this match.
“I knew our team was ready, we had the right attitude from the start.
“But I made an error, I really think, in our training leading up to this tournament. We had done such a good job, finding that fine line between pushing ourselves in training and yet holding our bodies back. In training I think I pushed them a little too far and subsequently we had two hamstring injuries that popped up last week and it really hampered our preparation. I think you saw that a little bit today. Our conditioning wasn’t perhaps what it should have been in spots. When you coach long enough, you learn these things the hard way sometimes. As good a job as we’ve done all year, I think I made a big mistake a couple weeks ago leading up to this tournament. But Florida State was fantastic in capitalizing. I thought they made a lot of balls in the clutch today in the heat and perhaps that was the difference. We certainly want to congratulate them.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers hadn’t made it to the Sweet 16 since the year 2000 but they punched their ticket on Saturday with a pretty dominating 4-0 win over No. 14 Oklahoma in a match that was played indoors in Norman due to excessive wind outdoors.
Minnesota won the doubles point for the 15th time in 25 tries with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then it added first sets in singles at the top four spots. Minnesota senior Felix Corwin, who clinched the Gophers 4-3 win over Georgia one day earlier, made it 2-0 with a straight set win at No. 1 and then junior Josip Krstanovic made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4.
Oklahoma fought back and forced third sets on each of the remaining courts but Minnesota freshman Jackson Allen pulled at No. 5 to clinch the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Jochen Bertsch.
“It’s hard to put into words the level of pride and happiness I have for this team and especially our two seniors who have done everything right during their entire time here,” said head coach Geoff Young via Minnesota’s recap. “The bottom of the line-up was the difference this weekend, playing their best tennis of the year. I’m really looking forward to another week of tennis with this group of guys.”

Alabama punched its first ticket to the Sweet 16 since 2007 by finishing off a tremendous weekend with a 4-2 win over No. 11 Florida State in a match that was plagued by multiple weather delays.
The Crimson Tide won the doubles point for the 24th time in 32 matches with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then the teams split first sets in singles. Alabama sophomore Edson Ortiz made it 2-0 with a straight set win at No. 4 but Florida State countered with straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Bama sophomore Alexey Nesterov put the Tide back in front after coming back from a 15/40 hole to close out Alex Knaff 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5. Minutes later fellow sophomore Zhe Zhou would provide the clincher with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 6.
“It feels incredible,” head coach George Husack said via Alabama’s recap. “It started with doubles, guys were confident, believed and were strong. Our guys battled. We had three rain delays, it’s late and we finished under the lights, but there was no stopping them.”
“Before we went out (after each rain delay), we got in a big huddle and I think I said the same speech four times and they prevailed. So it’s incredible. They did such an incredible job today.”
“When we were at the SEC Tournament and lost to Tennessee, you felt awful (for Zhou).” Husack added. “I told him, ‘Hey you got to experience this to get stronger, and you’ll get another shot at it.’ And it came down to him again today, and for him to close it out, I’m so proud of him and how far he’s come, he’s grown into a man.”
