Saturday Recap: Stanford Stomps Vandy; UCLA Edges Cal; Arizona & Oklahoma State Win Blue Gray Titles; Michigan Clips Notre Dame 4-3

The big top 10 showdown on Saturday took place at Stanford with the No. 4 Cardinal hosting No. 7 Vanderbilt in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship Final. Stanford won that match in Winston-Salem 4-3 with some final court drama but this one on Saturday at Stanford was a pretty cut and dry win for the Cardinal. Stanford rolled through doubles only dropping two games each at No. 1 and No. 3 and then they added five first sets in singles with four of them being lopsided 6-1 scores. Melissa Lord made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over at No. 2 and Emma Higuchi made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 6. Emily Arthbuthnott provided the clincher at No. 4 with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win. 

The other matches were played out with Stanford adding two more points with wins at No. 5 and No. 3 while Vandy got its lone point at No. 1 after Fernanda Contreras fought off multiple match points to win a third set supertiebreak 14-12.

Fifth-ranked UCLA improved to 7-1 with a 4-3 win in Berkeley over No. 24 Cal. The Bears took the early 1-0 lead in this non-conference match by winning the doubles decider at No. 1 in a tiebreak. Each team took three opening sets in singles and five of the six matches would finish in straight sets. With the match tied at 3-3, UCLA’s Abi Altick would come back from 1-6, 1-3 down to take a 1-6, 6-4, 4-1 lead. Cal’s Anna Bright came back to tie it up at 4-4 and the match would eventually go to a tiebreak that Altick would win 7-5. 

We played much better doubles today, and I was really impressed with how we adjusted today and really stepped it up in the doubles, said Cal head coach Amanda Augustus. It was super tight, and we were able to come through. This is a top-10 team you have to really battle against them in doubles and singles, and I thought we did.

In singles, it came down to a couple of points, so Im really proud of our effort. We got better today as a team, even from yesterday. We have one more opportunity to play tomorrow, and Im excited to continue our progress. We settled into playing at Hellman again today, and we had fantastic crowd support again. We had some good wins today Hana had a great win and Kate had a great win. There was a whole lot of good out here today, and Im just proud of how this team, early in the season, competes together really hard. Hopefully the fans appreciate that and come out again and support us tomorrow.

The Arizona men and Oklahoma State women captured team titles at the 71st Annual Blue Gray Classic. Arizona defeated No. 32 Texas Tech 4-3 in the semifinals when Alejandro Reguant defeated Ilgiz Valiev 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 and in the finals they defeated No. 48 Ole Miss 4-1. Earlier in the day Ole Miss had upset No. 16 Alabama 4-2.

Oklahoma State posted three shutout victories over Friday and Saturday with the final two coming over No. 35 Texas Tech and No. 33 Wake Forest. Full results are available on the Blue Gray’s website. 

 

Michigan came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 12 Notre Dame 4-3. The Irish took the doubles point and picked up a straight set win at No. 4 but Michigan added straight set wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 to go in front 3-2. Michigan sophomore Mattias Siimar clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 win at No. 1 with Notre Dame winning the final match at No. 5 to make it 4-3.

Mississippi State bounced back from a less than stellar weekend indoors by getting a nice win outdoors against No. 21 Oklahoma in a match that played at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona. The Bulldogs took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then added wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 with Nuno Borges getting the clincher at No. 1 with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(2) win. MSU was playing without Niclas Braun (#4 singles/#2 doubles).

“It was a great match,” head coach Matt Roberts said. “I’m very proud of the guys and how they competed. Nuno (Borges) and Strahinja (Rakic) were unreal for us from the start to give us a quick advantage at No. 1, and then it came down to (Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler at) No. 3. Trevor (Foshey) and Giovanni (Oradini) made a good push. I’m just really happy with all three doubles teams. Singles was unreal for us. The guys have a lot of resiliency and grit right now. I was really happy with how we competed in the heat and played tough outdoor tennis. I’m really proud of them.”
