Friday was a stacked day with nine matchups between top 25 teams with six of those coming on the women’s side. The highest profile match on the men’s side took place in Waco with sixth-ranked Baylor hosting ninth-ranked TCU. The Bears claimed the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 and a 7-6(5) win at No. 3 and then in singles each team won three opening sets. Only two of the six matches would finish in straight sets with Baylor’s Sven Lah winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 while TCU’s Alex Rybakov won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1.
Baylor’s Will Little put the Bears up 3-1 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Jimmy Bendeck clinched at No. 6 with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 win. The other two matches were played out with Baylor’s Johannes Schretter winning at No. 2 while TCU’s Reese Stalder won at No. 3.

The top teams in the Pac-12 faced off on Friday with the UCLA men going to Stanford and getting a 4-2 win while the Cardinal women went to Westwood and pulled out a 4-3 win. The Bruin men gained the early lead after Maxime Cressy and Keegan Smith came back from 6-4 down to win a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles 8-6 and then in singles both would deliver again with Smith defeating Alexandre Rotsaert 6-2, 6-4 while Cressy clinched with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Axel Geller at No. 1.

Both the South Carolina and Texas A&M men and women squared off on Friday with the Gamecock women winning a top 12 showdown on the road 4-0 while the Aggie men went to Columbia and won a top 18 matchup 5-2.
South Carolina won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then they quickly made it 3-0 with straight set wins from Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Megan Davies at No. 1 and No. 4. Silvia Chinellato clinched at No. 5 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win while Paige Cline was a game away at No. 2 up 5-2 in the third.
“We knew this was going to be a very tough environment to compete in,” South Carolina head coach Kevin Epley said. “They have a loud crowd and they are a very competitive team. It really was a war out there. I’m proud of our team for hanging tough and stepping up at the end of the match to get the job done.”

“This was a high level tennis match. I knew going into the match that South Carolina was really good in doubles and we just let that first point get away. They played a great match at three doubles, but we were excellent at two doubles. We had a little bit of bad luck on court one when we could have evened the match at four-all. Unfortunately in competition, like life, things don’t always go the way you want them to. We got an unlucky break there that might have cost us that doubles point, but we need to be tougher than that. Then in singles we were able to get four first sets, but to their credit they were able to turn that. We responded how we needed to in singles, but they raised their game to the next level. All credit to them, they have a very fine team.”

Louisville picked up its first conference win of the season with a 4-0 upset over #22 Miami. The Cardinals claimed the doubles point and added wins from Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff, Brandon Lancaster, and Fabien Salle.
“We’ve played some of the top ACC schools on the road lately, and taking our lumps and this team didn’t give up,” said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. “It was just like excitement, built up frustration and all of that emotion all came out at the end of the match. That’s how we feel, we feel happy, relieved, satisfied and we haven’t really lightened up practice. We’ve made it more intense and that’s kind of risky at the end of the season but these guys really responded.”
“Credit to Louisville. They beat us today,” Miami head coach Aljosa Piric said. “It is very difficult to go on the road in the ACC and win matches because home court is such a big advantage in this conference and our guys did not adapt fast enough to indoor conditions. It was faster than usual, it was loud and it was crowded, and it took our guys a little too long to get going. By the time we did, we had dug ourselves a hole that we couldn’t quite climb out of.
“But that’s the ACC; every team is tough, especially at home and we have got to learn from this loss, like any other loss and continue to improve and get better and advance our program,” Piric continued. “We have a couple days off and then we are going to get back to work on Monday and prepare for two more tough matches against Virginia Tech and [fifth-ranked] Virginia.”

Fifth-ranked Virginia avoided a big upset at home by pulling out a 4-2 win over Duke. The Cavs won the doubles point but the Blue Devils countered with straight set wins from Robert Levine and Vincent Lin at No. 5 and No. 6 to go up 2-1. The other four matches went the distance with UVA’s Carl Soderlund, Henrik Wiersholm, and Gianni Ross winning at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 while Brandon Nakashima led 5-3 in the third at No. 1.
“Credit to Duke for a great match,” said Virginia head coach Andres Pedroso. “I thought they competed really hard and I thought they played really well. Our guys fought until the end, stayed the course and stayed composed, which is what we’ve done all year. I have to be proud of the team for that.”
I am proud of my guys, said Duke head coach Ramsey Smith. It was a great college tennis match and we played and competed very well. I was impressed with how quickly we bounced back from losing the doubles point with strong wins from Bob and Vinny. We did another great job of getting the doubles point, said head coach Jennifer Hyde. We did what we needed to do but we still need to improve. We are playing with a lot of confidence and when we do that we play aggressive and that is what I like to see out of this team.
We got down early in a few spots in singles but did a fantastic job of hanging in it and finding our way back into them, said Hyde. You expect every match in the ACC to be a battle and that is what that was. I am proud of these girls for pulling off a top-15 win.
