The number of head coaching jobs at Power 5 schools is now up to six after LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva announced on Monday that men’s head coach Jeff Brown was resigning after 20 years. Brown won just over 60 percent of the 517 matches he coached and was an even .500 against SEC competition. Brown’s LSU teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament 17 times however this year the Tigers fell well short after going 10-17 overall and just 3-9 in the SEC. Brown’s best seasons in Baton Rouge came in his first two seasons when he led the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA semifinals. Alleva called the resignation a “mutual decision” though I’m pretty sure Brown wasn’t the one to approach Alleva on the subject. Below is a quote from LSU’s release:

“It’s been a great run,” Brown said. “We had so much success and had so many great people come through our program. I’m proud of all the players that we coached here at LSU and all that we were able to accomplish as a program.”

The other Power 5 jobs currently open are: Virginia men, Virginia women, Tennessee men, USC women, and Minnesota women.

We’re only a few days away from the start of the NCAA Tournament so it’s time to take a look at each of the men’s regionals. I have the schedule of play listed on my NCAA Tournament page and in each regional preview I’ll list the singles records, singles UTRs, doubles records, UTR Team Power 6, plus I’ll make my prediction at the end. I’ll give the first one away for free but to see the rest you’ll need to be a CTT subscriber ($9.99 month/no long term commitment required).

Wake Forest Regional

#1 Wake Forest [1] vs. #103 UNC Wilmington [4] – Friday 5 p.m. ET – The regular season ACC Champs only lost two matches on the year and UNC Wilmington isn’t going to be the team to provide the third. The Seahawks won the Colonial for the first time since 2014 despite dropping four of its final five matches heading into the conference tournament. UNCW played five ranked teams on the season and went 0-5 while being outscored 25-1. Prediction: Wake Forest 4-0

Overall Record: Wake 27-2; UNCW 14-8
Doubles Record: Wake 25-4; UNCW 9-12
UTR Power 6: Wake Forest 86, UNC Wilmington 79

#32 Kentucky [2] vs. #40 Georgia State [3] – Friday 2 p.m. ET – Kentucky limped to the finish line by losing its last four and six of its last eight while Georgia State closed out the season strong by winning its final 11. Kentucky has more talent top to bottom but with the way they finished you have to wonder if they have the desire to extend the season. Kentucky’s Ryotaro Matsumura, who was a rock last season, really struggled in the final six weeks of the season going 0-5 with all five losses coming in straight sets. Neither team exactly lit it up in doubles but if Georgia State is to pull off the upset it’s a point they’ll need to have.

I’m going to go on the assumption that Kentucky has used the last two weeks to get re-energized and will come ready to play but I guess we won’t know until Friday afternoon. I’m going to take GSU in doubles and Andrukhou in singles but Kentucky fights through with Bushamuka, Pennington, Ellefsen, and Wallart picking up wins. Prediction: Kentucky 4-2

Overall Record: Kentucky 14-12; Georgia State 19-6
Doubles Record: Kentucky 11-15; Georgia State 12-12
UTR Power 6: Kentucky 84, Georgia State 80

Regional Final: Wake nearly got taken out in the second round last year by Michigan but it won’t that close this year. Prediction: Wake Forest 4-0

Stanford Regional

#16 Stanford [1] vs. #119 Idaho [4] – Friday 5 p.m. ET – Stanford is hosting a regional for the first time in five years after its win over Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament was just enough to keep them ahead of Michigan. When Idaho lost to Southern Utah back on March 14th it looked like the Vandals were going to miss out this year but a late season rally where they outscored their opponents 27-2 was enough to put them back in the Big Dance for the second time in the last three years. The Idaho men’s team will have the support of the women’s team who will also be playing Stanford but it’s going to take a lot more than that to make this one competitive. I don’t see Stanford dropping a set anywhere – Prediction: Stanford 4-0

#17 Michigan [2] vs. #84 Valparaiso [3] – Friday 2 p.m. ET – Michigan missed out on hosting by just one spot but they won’t have time to sulk because Valpo is going to be ready to play. The Crusaders went 23-3 on the year though they lost to the only ranked opponent they faced which was Wisconsin (4-3). Michigan went 1-5 when losing the doubles point of course those five losses were to some tough competition (Ohio State 2X, Oklahoma State, Cal, Oklahoma. Many people think this will be a Michigan rout but I think Valpo is going to give them all they want and more. I’m going to take Valpo in doubles and Schorsch and Dunn in singles but Michigan survives with Runhao Hua pulling out a three setter at No. 4 to clinch. Prediction: Michigan 4-3

Overall Record: Michigan 22-6; Valparaiso 23-3
Doubles Record: Michigan 21-7 ; Valparaiso 22-4

Regional Final: They’ll be a lot of good battles up and down the singles lineup but I think the home court advantage and familiarities with the elements will help push Stanford over the top.  I like the Cardinal in doubles and Fawcett, Wilczynski, and Sutter in singles. Prediction: Stanford 4-1
