Sherwood CupDominik Mueller made his head coaching debut on Friday afternoon in Raleigh and it was a successful one as Old Dominion defeated NC State 6-1. The Monarchs won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 then they won a slew of three-set singles matches with all but one going the distance. The dual was played indoors at NC State’s 4-court facility with matches at 1, 2, 3, and 4 singles going on first. ODU’s Jacob Nicolussi won the only straight set match at No. 3 to make it 2-0 and then Adam Moundir rallied from a set down at No. 1 to win in three to make it 3-0. NC State picked up its lone point when Igor Saveljic came back from a set down to win at No. 4 but Michael Weindl clinched the ODU win with a come from behind win at No. 2. They played the final two matches out with ODU’s Maestre and Herrera each dropping the first set then coming back to win in three sets. ODU is back at it on Sunday as they host Richmond and Howard while NC State will play a doubleheader against The Citadel on Monday.
“This team together hasn’t won anything yet,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “We have to figure out how to do that. Old Dominion is a good team. They won a lot of matches last year and know how to win.”
“They got chances and they finished and closed out the games. That’s what a team that wins knows how to do and we did not do that. We put ourselves in a position to win. We were serving for a couple sets twice and we just didn’t do it.”

Texas Tech and Arizona played the first collegiate match at the brand new Home of the USTA in Lake Nona but unfortunately rain halted play just minutes after the doubles point began. Texas Tech will play a doubleheader on Saturday against New Mexico (Noon ET) and Central Florida (7 p.m. ET) – you can watch the live stream of these matches at this
link (select USTA National Campus Collegiate Center).
Rain also washed out the opening day of the
National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Rancho Mirage, California, though further to the west in Thousand Oaks they were able to begin the Sherwood Cup albeit with a later start. Stanford sophomore
Jack Barber made his collegiate debut after sitting out last year with an injury and it was a highly successful one with Barber defeating the top seed UCLA senior Gage Brymer 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. UCLA freshman
Evan Zhu also made his collegiate debut and it was winning debut with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Baylor sophomore Jimmy Bendeck. As I mentioned yesterday USC’s Brandon Holt, Nick Crystal, Logan Smith, and Riley Smith had to withdraw since they were still playing in the Long Beach Futures event which had been plagued by weather issues. Full singles results are down below with the doubles results available
here.
Both the second round and quarterfinal round will be played on Saturday.
