Throughout the slower summer months I’m going to try and do a weekly post on Sundays highlighting the performance of current college guys as well as recent grads out on the ATP Pro Tour. I’m sure I’ll miss some because there are a ton of guys out there playing but I should be able to hit on the guys that do well (quarters-finals)
May 18-24:
#242 Daniel Nguyen (USC ’12) won a $15K Future in Daegu, Korea – it was Nguyen’s 7th career pro title.
#789 Sadio Doumbia (UGA ’12) won a $10K Future in Annaba, Algeria – it was Doumbia’s 1st career pro title.
#298 Marek Michalicki (Wisc ’11) won a $10K Future in Jablonec Nad Nisou, Czech Republic – it was Michalicki’s 9th career pro title
#630 KU Singh (UGA ’13) won a $10K Future in Mandya, India – opponent retired down 3-0 in 1st – it was Singh’s 3rd career pro title.
#607 Georgi Rumenov Payakov (Armstrong Atlantic ’13) won a $10K Future in Pombal, Portugal – it was his 2nd career pro title and 2nd in a row.
#56 Steve Johnson (USC ’12) won his 1st round match at the French Open defeating #24 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(1), 3-6, 6-3.
If you have others that you feel merit mention post a comment below and I’ll add as many in as I can. I just want to make sure those guys that are grinding it out in the blazing sun of summer get the recognition they deserve.
Yeah, him and Deni Zmak from Embry-Riddle are two players from the lower divisions who I think could have done very well had they played for a D1 power conference school.
His senior year he beat Georgia's Ben Wagland & Austin Smith & Marco Nunez (now at Florida State), Florida's Billy Federhofer, and he lost 7-6 in the 3rd to Vanderbilt's Gonzales Austin. No doubt he would have played at #1 at many Power 5 schools.
I wonder how Rumenov would have done had he played D1. Great player, did not lose many matches playing at Armstrong.
K. U. Singh quit the team for purely selfish reasons & abandoned UGA on the eve of '13 NCAA Tourney so IMO he doesn't deserve in any way, shape or form to be called a UGA man; it was a cowardly, totally self-centered act to desert his team mates in that fashion without any legitimate justification; on a brighter note Congrats to Sadio on his Championship
Thanks for supporting and covering the hard working college guys and gals that are turning pro. Glad to see someone give them some much deserved press. Also, your coverage, including predictions prior to matches, of NCAAs has been amazing. Is there a Pulitzer for this or something? If there is you should get one. It is appreciated by many college fans out there and word of your work is spreading! Helps bring the community together in these days of bad scoreboards and live streams that may or may not exist. Thanks Bobby.
