It was a perfect day on Sunday with our favorite former/current college guys going 4-0 in finals with Dennis Novikov, Sanam Singh, Adrien Puget, and Ryan Shane each winning pro singles titles.
Dennis Novikov (UCLA ’13) won his 2nd career Challenger by defeating #116 Ryan Harrison 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the finals of the $50K Columbus, Ohio Challenger. It was the second week in a row that Novikov won a Challenger and the second week in a row that he beat Ryan Harrison in the finals. After each of his first 4 sets went to tiebreaks, Novikov didn’t play another the rest of the week. Novikov has now won 8 career singles titles (2 Challenger/6 Futures) and with the win and accompanying 80 points he has now achieved a new career high singles ranking of 144 (up from 163 last week). Novikov raked in $7200 in prize money for the win.
Sanam Singh (Virginia ’11) won his 9th career Futures singles title by knocking off #220 Frank Dancevic 6-4, 6-2 in the finals of the Markham, Canada F11 Future. Singh and Dancevic were meeting in a Canada Futures final for the second week in a row, with Dancevic winning the previous encounter, and in fact Dancevic had a 19-match winning streak coming into today’s final. Singh picks up 27 points for the win and when those points are added in next week he’ll have a new career high ranking of around 263 (293 was previous high)
Adrien Puget (UCLA ’14) won his 3rd career Futures singles title with a 7-6(1), 6-0 win over #240 Mohamed Safwat 7-6(1), 6-0 in finals of the Cairo, Egypt F32 Future. Puget is now 13-1 in his last 14 matches and has won 2 of his 3 singles titles in that span. Puget’s singles ranking is now up to a career high of 433 and when these 27 points are added in next week he’ll have another new career high ranking of around 362. Puget is a stout 30-13 on the year in main draw matches after going just 5-3 in 2014.
Ryan Shane (Virginia Sr) won his 1st career Futures singles title by defeating #592 Ernesto Escobedo 6-4, 6-3 in the finals of the Costa Mesa, California USA F27 Future. Shane’s previous best showing at a Futures was a semifinal appearance in Rochester (lost to Connor Smith) in June 2014 and in fact going into this tournament Shane hadn’t won a main draw match at a Futures since Markham, Canada in September of last year. Shane earned 18 points for the title and when those points are added in next week he’ll have a new career high singles ranking of around 881 (give or take a spot). For full details on Saturday’s semifinals check out the world famous Parsa’s recap on Jonathan Kelley’s site On The Rise (a tennis blog).
