Friday was a wild day of tennis with several teams coming from behind to pull out thrilling wins. The biggest comeback of the day took place in Blacksburg as No. 23 Florida State appeared to be down and out against No. 40 Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 but Florida State turned it around in singles and took first sets at one through four.

FSU’s Benjamin Lock cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Joao Monteiro at No. 1 but Virginia Tech answered with a 7-6, 6-3 win from Aaron Gomez at No. 6.

The other four matches would go the distance and after Amerigo Contini put Virginia Tech up 3-1 with a win at No. 3 it looked like the Hokies were just moments away from clinching on a few other courts.

Andreas Bjerrehus and Marco Nunez were on serve headed toward a tiebreak at No. 2 but Virginia Tech had break leads on the other two courts. Virginia Tech’s Edoardo Tessaro led Aziz Dougaz 4-2 in the third at No. 4 and Mitch Harper led Jose Gracia 5-3 in the third at No. 5. Virginia Tech just needed to close out one of those three courts but amazingly they wouldn’t be able to do it.

Marco Nunez put FSU’s second point on the board after he won the third set tiebreak over Bjerrehus 7-1 and then Dougaz pulled out a third set tiebreak over Tessaro 10-8 to tie the match at 3-3.

Virginia Tech freshman Mitch Harper served for the match up 5-4 in the third but got broke from 30-40 (if I’m not mistaken). Gracia held quickly for 6-5 and then Harper finally held for 6-6. Harper led 4-3 in the tiebreak but Gracia took the next four points to close it out 7-4. Harper’s serve really let him down deep in the third set because after he missed his first, Gracia was pouncing on his second serve.

Post-Match Quotes from FSU’s recap

Head coach Dwayne Hultquist – “It was an unbelievable match. For us to win against a very tough program in Virginia Tech, who hosted an NCAA regional last year and has a lot of seniors in their lineup, was huge. It was a tough day. We overcame the adversity of not winning doubles. We had a good start to the singles portion, winning four first sets. When Jose fought back in the second set to force a third, that was a turning point for us. Aziz was clutch, overcoming a break down in the third for the win.

“It follows up our successes from last weekend, against North Carolina and Duke, and to win this match on the road really speaks to our seniors and our team to fight hard and not give up. Three matches we could have lost in a tiebreaker and we won all three. I love the spirit with our guys doing the Seminole chant. Our players really got behind Jose in the clincher. I’m proud of Jose for competing after being down in the third, he was winning points at the net. Great team effort.

On senior Benjamin Lock:
“Ben’s on fire. In the ACC, he’s playing a Top 20 player almost every match. He beat a player today that was in the finals of the National Indoors, a darn good player. Ben’s success comes from his approach to the game we show up to practice, he’s on the courts ready to go, training hard. He beat a good player, a great player, today. Beating him today at his place was huge.
Sophomore Jose Gracia:
“I was just taking it point by point in the tiebreaker. I never really thought about the moment, just wanted to keep playing my game. I was able to fight back from an early mini-break and my teammates kept cheering me on. I knew I was going to step up. I hit a backhand passing shot and took it to him. It was a very competitive match.

Vanderbilt went on the road to Lexington and pulled off a 4-3 stunner over No. 17 Kentucky. Vandy won what turned out to be a crucial doubles point by taking the deciding court at No. 1 in a tiebreak. Kentucky rallied in singles and took four opening sets but they’d only be able to close out three of those with William Bushamuka, Trey Yates, and Jake Stefanik winning at 1, 5, and 6.

Vanderbilt picked up straight set wins from Cameron Klinger and Baker Newman at 3 and 4 so it all came down to a third set at No. 2.

Vanderbilt senior Rhys Johnson led Kentucky freshman Ryotaro Matsumura 5-1 in the third but Matsumura took the next five games to go up 6-5. Johnson got a hold to send it to a tiebreak then he pulled away in the tiebreak taking it by a 7-1 score.

Post-Match Quotes from Vandy’s recap
“We’ve been close all year long, said head coach Ian Duvenhage, “and we’ve played a bunch of good matches and haven’t had much to show for it in the win column. We’ve been talking about the fact that if we keep knocking on the door, and that we just have to stay with it and keep the faith beating these guys is not easy to do. The crowd was incredibly rowdy; it was actually very dramatic. But the point is that Rhys (Johnson) handled the situation extremely well.
“I think our doubles has gotten better consistently with each week. I thought we played good doubles against Georgia, but obviously came up short. Today, we got in a bit of a jam at No. 2, but came back and kept it competitive. Baker and Tate got off the court early to give us a 1-0 lead. Then Rhys and Cam did what they’ve done pretty much all year I think at this point you have to say that they’re one of the best doubles teams in the country.
“Rhys had a great third set, but then was having trouble converting. So he was in a pickle there serving at 5-6, and found a way to hold to get it into the tiebreaker.
“Well, honestly, I was just relieved to get to the tiebreaker, said Johnson. “Then once it started I just wanted to keep my first serve percentage up and try to make the guy play as many balls as possible. Fortunately, I came out on top of most of those points.

“We showed real heart today after losing the doubles point, said Auburn head coach Eric Shore. “It was tough to lose that doubles point in a tiebreaker, but I thought we really fought back and battled in every singles match. We need to continue to do that in conference matches. It was a good start today.
Post-Match Quote from Ole Miss’s recap
Quoting Head Coach Toby Hansson“We were in good position after the doubles and started off well in singles. Unfortunately, we were not able to continue the momentum. We need to put this match behind us and move forward. We have had some good memories against Florida and I know that the guys are hungry to bounce back on Sunday.

Post-Match Quotes from Florida’s recap
Head Coach Bryan Shelton – On the confidence this win over a Top-15 program builds
“I felt we have been so close in a lot of matches that we lost this season. We lost four 4-3 matches but all of those matches have been on the road. I think it certainly helps us to play at home tonight in front of our fans. I also think we have learned from our experiences with those losses and we understand how we need to set our mindsets before the match. Just like going into the doubles with the right mindset and then when we win the doubles point, we make sure to get our hands wrapped around the first part of the singles match and really try to apply pressure early in those matches. I thought our guys did an unbelievable job tonight of setting the tone early in those singles matches where we won five of the first sets. Then we were able to finish in the end. When they made their push and came out hard like Texas Tech did and Ohio State did earlier, tonight we answered the bell. I am just really proud of our guys for seeing it through.”

Post-Match Quote from Texas A&M’s recap
“It was another really tough SEC battle. I thought we did a great job in the doubles to secure that point. Down at the back of the line-up we were able to put three points on the board pretty quickly, which put a lot of pressure on Mississippi State. I was really pleased with that. The matches we were ahead in we were able to finish. I knew Mississippi State was going to be really good and I was really pleased with how well our guys performed. The motivation has to be internal and I thought our guys did a good job being internally motivated to play against a really tough Mississippi State team,” – Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton

Post-Match Quote from Mississippi State’s recap

“We played tough today and I thought Mate and Niclas stepped up in singles play, head coach Matt Roberts said. “We need to keep working hard and looking forward, because the SEC schedule doesn’t get any easier. We’ll take this loss and use it as a lesson and keep improving like we’ve done all year long.

“Great gutsy win by these guys today,” Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. “I felt like we were losing almost the entire time except for the last 20 minutes. This is one of the things we try to enforce with the guys, you’re never out of it, and there’s always an opportunity. The guys did it today, under the gun, on the road, against a team that’s been top-20 most of this year.”

Post-Match Quotes from USD’s recap

“Guys fought and fought and fought today against a battle tested, competitive team. Head Coach Ryan Keckley said of the match. “We played an inspired doubles point and came out of the gates up 1-0.
“We came up a tad short in singles. Our opportunities presented themselves with a few team match points, but those points are the hardest to capture. I am really proud of the group and continue to be impressed by the way we stand together as a unit. We’ll be ready to use this experience tomorrow against a feisty Princeton squad.”

Post-Match Quote from Texas Tech’s recap
“Today’s response was the answer that we needed to have,” Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. “The energy level, the competitiveness and the team effort we showed from start to finish was what I was most proud about it. We were ready from the start. I thought we showed a great intensity level in doubles and carried that into singles. Hugo had a big bounce-back win, and I thought we learned some valuable lessons from yesterday’s match.”

Post-Match Quote from Princeton’s recap

We lost to a very good Texas Tech team today, but clearly we had plenty of chances. We were in the match down the stretch, though having to win four three-setters against a team the caliber of Tech is a tough assignment. We put ourselves in that hole by playing a poor doubles point and losing four first sets in singles. However, we rallied and kept fighting to give ourselves an opportunity. We’ll learn from this match and look foward to bouncing back tomorrow” – Princeton head coach Billy Pate

Head Coach Josh Goffi: “We’re going to move past this one. There were plenty of matches where we were right there; we just failed to move ahead. We failed to play the right way in big moments, and that’s something that we have to learn from today. We’re not going to get mad about the loss as long as we can learn from it. The major takeaway is exactly that. We just need to be a little more aggressive in the big moments, be willing to step up and play big.”
Post-Match Quotes from Georgia’s recap
“Our guys played a complete match today, said head coach Manuel Diaz. “We were good from warm ups on. It was certainly tough on many courts and South Carolina challenged us at every position, but I’m proud of how everyone played out there today. Austin Smith continues to play outstanding tennis to lead the way for this team and it was very good to see Wayne Montgomery really come through and find his game.

Post-Match Quotes from Alabama’s recap
“Tonight required mental and physical fortitude from start to finish,” said Alabama head coach George Husack. “We had a great start in doubles, and it carried over into the first sets of singles. But then a light flashed red that said check engine. We had a choice, pull over for service or keep going until the engine would no longer run. Well, we had just enough oil, coolant and fuel to get the job done, and I’m happy for the guys. We’ll spend a little time at the auto shop tomorrow and get refueled for Sunday’s battle with a very good Texas A&M team.”
Post-Match Quotes from LSU’s recap
“We didn’t play as well in double in certain spots that we usually do and we needed to give ourselves the momentum, Head Coach Jeff Brownsaid.
“We gave ourselves some chances, Brown added. “Ultimately, we didn’t have enough to make the comeback but I think the guys are fighting as a team and we are hoping to continue to show improvement.

Top-ranked Virginia had no trouble on Friday afternoon and blanked No. 33 NC State 7-0. Virginia took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then the Hoos swept all six singles matches. Collin Altamirano, Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, Henrik Wiersholm, and Mac Styslinger only dropped a combined nine games in their four matches at 2, 3, 5, and 6.

Ryan Shane and J.C. Aragone won their matches in three-sets at 1 and 4.

NC State sat both of its top two players, Nick Horton and Simon Norenius, either due to a minor injury or possibly due to competition day issues.

Post-Match Quotes from Virginia’s recap
“I was pleased with our overall performance today against a strong NC State team, said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “It was a positive for us to play in some pretty difficult conditions with swirling winds on the courts. Hopefully that gives us some good experience on how to deal with less-than-perfect conditions, because nothing is ever going to be just right. Now we look forward to preparing to play an outstanding Florida State team on Sunday.

Post-Match Quotes from Notre Dame’s recap
“That’s the epitome of pressure tennis, Irish head coach Ryan Sachire said. “I think to come through consistently like we did was awesome and something to build upon moving forward. We always talk about controlling what you can control and being gritty in responses to adversity and I thought our guys did a really good job of that today, and the heart they competed with was outstanding.
“I knew that I had a job to do and that was to win the match, Covalschi said. “After the first set I went down a break and, in the past, it was hard for me to hit the reset button, but the coaches encouraged me to control everything I can control, so I stayed as positive as I could and build some momentum and let it carry on point to point.
“I was really proud of our team from the perspective that it was a tough weekend last weekend, but we came back on Tuesday and had one of the best practices of the season and had another great practice on Wednesday, Sachire said. “We felt like we were turning the page quickly, which is what we needed to do. They came out and established themselves with confidence and played well.

Post-Match Quotes from GT’s recap
Head Coach Kenny Thorne SAYS — “Credit to Clemson for fighting through and getting the point. But it’s only one point. It was great to see the way our guys responded. We went up a set in all six matches fairly quickly, then we got up early in the second sets and didn’t relax. It was a great match for us going into spring break, typically the guys have a lot of tests this week. They played with a lot of energy.”
Post-Match Quotes from Clemson’s recap
“All the credit to a good Georgia Tech team and its coaches today in Atlanta. Our team came out and continued to play solid doubles. In singles however, the positive energy and self talk we have brought to the courts this last month with our play was not there, said Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “I know we will rebound and learn from today’s match, and look forward to our next opportunity on Sunday against Wake Forest in North Carolina.”

Post-Match Quotes from UNC’s recap
“I liked the way we came out in doubles at one and two, really good energy, UNC coach Sam Paul said. “That set the tone for the whole day. I liked the way we played, up and down the lineup. A couple of slips here and there, but overall it was a good performance.
“Louisville’s got a well-coached team their coach [Rex Ecarma] has been around a long time and he does a really good job of getting those guys prepared. We knew they’d fight us.
“At five and six, the freshmen did a good job of sticking in there and getting the job done, Schneider said. “It was a good start to the weekend and now we’ll get ready for State. They always give us their best.
“We’re looking forward to playing NC State again, Paul said. “They’ve got a heck of a team and they gave us everything we could handle the last time here, so it will be a great match in Raleigh.
Post-Match Quotes from Louisville’s recap
“North Carolina looks and plays like a team favored to win the national championship,” said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. “Their confidence and body language were good and they won a majority of the close games.”
