This past week was a good one for recent NCAA singles champions with the 2016 champ Mackenzie McDonald winning the $100K Fairfield Challenger while the 2017 champ Thai Kwiatkowski won the $25K Houston Futures. Prior to last week McDonald’s best performance at the Challenger-level was the semifinals but he plowed past that point with a straight set win over Australia’s Christopher O’Connell and then in the finals he defeated Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-2. McDonald earned a $14,400 payday plus he picked up 90 ATP ranking points which moved him up to a new career-high ranking of 164. .@mackiemacster reflects on his maiden #ATPChallenger title...

Prior to this week Michael Venus (LSU ’09) had never made it past the round of 16 at a grand slam but today he and Ryan Harrison are French Open doubles champions after the duo defeated Donald Young and Santiago Gonzalez in a tough three-setter. There were no breaks of serve in the first two sets with Venus and Harrison taking the first set 7-6(5) while Young and Gonzalez claimed the second set 7-6(4). In the third and final set, Venus and Harrison broke for 4-2 but Young and Gonzalez broke back in a four-deuce game for 4-3. Venus and Harrison broke again for 5-3 and then Harrison served it out in a one-deuce game to give the guys with Louisiana...

12 players with collegiate ties won pro titles last week with 10 of those titles coming within the United States. Jarmere Jenkins (Virginia ’13) won his first singles title of the year, seventh of his career, with a 6-1, 7-5 win over #292 Marc Polmans in the final of the $25K Australia F6 Futures in Brisbane. Interesting to note that five of Jenkins’s seven career titles have come in Australia.
