Tuesday was the final day of the ITA Regional Championships with the doubles final played in both the Northeast and Southern while the Atlantic wrapped up play in singles. Columbia’s Jack Mingjie Lin and William Matheson won an all-Columbia doubles final in the Northeast Regional with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over top seeds Victor Pham and Jackie Tang. Ohio State rising sophomore JJ Wolf was a set away from winning the 2017 USTA Boys 18 National Championship in Kalamazoo but Patrick Kypson fought back to win the fourth and fifth sets to come away with the title and US Open main draw wild card. Kypson had the upper-hand for most of the first set with the 17-year old from Greenville (NC) holding serve rather quickly while Wolf had to work for his holds. Ohio State rising sophomore JJ Wolf is one win away from earning a main draw wild card into the US Open after he defeated Cornell commit Alafia Ayeni 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals of the USTA Boys 18 National Championship in Kalamazoo. Wolf’s previous best singles performance at the Zoo was two years ago when he made it to the semifinals of the Boys 16 before falling to Patrick Kypson who then went on to win the title the next day. Chris Eubanks showed on Thursday night that he wasn’t a one-trick pony as the rising senior at Georgia Tech knocked off ATP #59 Jared Donaldson 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to move into the quarterfinals at the BB&T Atlanta Open. Eubanks went down a break midway through the first set when Donaldson broke from 15/40 to go ahead 3-2 but Eubanks broke back in the next game from 30/40 and then broke again in a two-deuce game to secure the opening set 6-4. Georgia Tech rising senior Chris Eubanks picked up his first career main draw win at the ATP-level and moved into the second round of the BB&T Atlanta Open with a straight set win over 19-year-old American Taylor Fritz. Both guys served well with each winning over 70% of the points on their serve but it was Eubanks who earned the lone break of the match and came away with the 7-6(5), 6-4 win. Eubanks was playing in the main draw of his hometown event for the third year in a row but this was the first time he was able to come away with the all-important win.
