Former Virginia Tech Hokie Sebastien Jacques is making his way across the country, by foot, after not being able to walk across a room just a few years ago. Jacques played at Virginia Tech from 2007 to 2010 but during his senior year he had to quit playing due to a lack of energy. After graduating with a degree in marketing he returned home to Magog, Canada, and after seeing several doctor he was eventually diagnosed with a pineal cystic tumor in his brain which was the cause of the energy drain. After watching a top 10 men’s showdown on Friday night in Winston-Salem, I took in a top 10 women’s showdown on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Fourth-ranked North Carolina hadn’t dropped a regular season conference match in three years and was riding a 50-match home court winning streak but both of those streaks would come to an end courtesy of tenth-ranked Georgia Tech. This has been a season of firsts for Cornell with the Big Red achieving a program high ranking of No. 18 a few weeks ago and then today they picked up their first ever top 10 win after going into Norman and defeating Oklahoma 4-3. The day didn’t start off very promising for Cornell because Oklahoma rolled through the doubles point picking up a 6-2 win at No. 2 and a 6-0 win at No. 3. The teams split first sets in singles and three of the six would finish in straight sets. The last time Oklahoma came into Columbus they broke Ohio State’s 200-match home court winning streak but on Sunday afternoon the only thing they’d break would be a few strings. Oklahoma looked poised to take the early lead after picking up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles but they’d let break leads slip away on the other two courts. It was a nice weekend for the two Southern California Pac-12 schools as both UCLA and USC swept their Northern California neighbors, Cal and Stanford. Both Cal and Stanford went 2-0 in doubles on the weekend but neither could do enough damage in singles to make the early lead hold up.Cal’s Mads Engsted and JT Nishimura cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Gage Brymer and Max Cressy but the Bruins appeared to be in control with 4-1* and *4-2 leads at No. 1 and No. 2.
