While most of us are spending the holiday season closer to home guys like Evan King are still out on the road trying to earn some extra points to better position themselves up for next year. The 2013 Michigan graduate has spent the last three weeks in the Dominican Republic and after a singles and doubles runner-up showing two weeks ago he was able to get the sweep this week. King won his fourth doubles title of the year, 17th career, when he and Alexios Halebian defeated Nebojsa Peric and Ilija Vucic 6-4, 6-4 at the Dominican Republic F3 Futures in Santo Domingo Este. Team USA came to France seeking to win a sixth straight Master’U BNP Paribas and that’s exactly what they did after defeating Russia 4-1. North Carolina senior Hayley Carter kicked off the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alena Tarasova but Russia countered with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win by Vladimir Korolev (13.44) over Northwestern senior Strong Kirchheimer (14.14). Ohio State sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo (12.55) put Team USA back in front with a 7-6(2), 7-5 win over Viktoria Kamenskaya (WTA 190/12.60) and then Georgia Tech junior Chris Eubanks (14.45) made it 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ivan Davydov (13.44). 13 players with college ties won pro events last week with another 15 finishing as runner-up. Wil Spencer (Georgia ’12) won his third career Futures singles title with a straight set win over Illinois junior Aron Hiltzik at the $25K USA F31 Futures in Houston. Spencer broke Hiltzik from 15/40 to take the first set 6-4 and then after falling behind 3-1 in the second Spencer reeled off five straight games to close it out 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 18 minutes. Spencer is expected to rise from 730 to around 585 in next week’s rankings while Hiltzik will shoot up from 1580 to around 885.Rhyne Williams (Tennessee) and Hans Hach (Abliene Christian ’13)...

It was a good day for former Michigan stars Evan King (’13) and Emina Bektas (’15) as the Wolverine duo won the US Open National Playoff Mixed Doubles Draw with a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (8) win over Sanaz Marand (North Carolina ’11) and Malcolm Harrison (NW Missouri St ’12). Friday was a busy day for the coaching carousel with Cal Irvine, Old Dominion, and Iowa each announcing head coaching hires. UC Irvine announced that Mike Saunders, who served as the interim men’s head coach last season, has been named as the permanent men’s head coach. Saunders, who is a 1990 UC Irvine graduate, took over as the interim coach last October after Trevor Kronemann, 117-126 (.481), stepped down to become the Director of Junior Tennis at the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA). Saunders led the Anteaters to a 17-9 record last season before they bowed out to UCSB in the Big West semifinals.Proud to welcome the newest head...
