Bulldogs Bite The Gators, Auburn Over South Carolina, Big Green Beats Big Blue, Stanford/USC Preview

The big match of the day in Gainesville had a close doubles point but once Georgia got the early lead it never looked back and ended up pulling away for a 4-1 win.The doubles point looked like it was Florida’s for the taking after the Gators #2 team of Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman cruised to a 6-1 win while its #1 tandem of Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson jumped out to a 4-2 lead.   With Georgia’s #3 team of Wayne Montgomery and Paul Oosterbaan also winning 6-1 the pressure would go back on Georgia’s #1 team of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland and the undefeated tandem wouldn’t go away as they took 3 straight games to go up 5-4 and...

Dawgs vs. Gators

The oldest tennis rivalry in the Deep South will add another chapter to its history books on Thursday evening when 17th ranked Florida hosts 7th ranked Georgia with 1st serve set to go up at 5:30pm sharp.  Georgia has played Florida more times than any other opponent and the same goes for Florida. One oddity I noticed is that Florida’s media guide shows it’s played Georgia 100 times while Georgia’s only lists 75 matches against Florida.  Below is what each shows is the record against the other: Georgia shows an all-time record of 56-19 against Florida,Florida shows an all-time record of 39-60-1 against Georgia....

Gators pull one out, Bulldogs bring the bite, Duke too tough, Big 12 rolls

The weekend is here and it was a fantastic Friday of tennis with the match of the day taking place in front of a national ESPN3 audience as Florida went into Tallahassee and pulled out a 4-2 win. Florida State picked up the doubles point by winning at 1 and 3 but Florida came out swinging in singles taking 4 1st sets.  After FSU extended the lead to 2-0 with a Cristian Gonzalez Mendez win at 5, Florida started finishing off courts 1 by 1 with Gordon Watson winning at 4 then Chase Perez-Blanco at 6.  With the score tied at 2-2, each of the remaining matches went to a 3rd set and after Elliott Orkin closed out Michael Rinaldi at #3 to give Florida its...

Look ahead to Friday – GT/UGA, FSU/FLA, TN/DUKE, and more

After a slow week things kick back into high gear tomorrow with the start of the Women’s National Team Indoors and with a fairly full slate on the men’s side.Georgia at Georgia Tech (5pm est) – The Bulldogs have won 27 of the last 28 in the series but Georgia Tech looks better this year than they have in a while. These teams just met 2 weeks ago at the MLK Invitational in Atlanta with Georgia Tech taking 4 of 7 singles matches and 2 of 3 in doubles in the hidden dual format.  Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery didn’t participate in the weekend event so with him back in the lineup and possibly playing at #1 I think the Bulldogs will...

Illinois & Georgia both pick up Top 10 wins

For the 2nd night in a row Champaign was the scene of a nail-biter but this time it was the host Illini coming out on top as they gutted out a 4-3 win over #6 North Carolina in a match that saw 5 of 6 singles matches go the distance with the deciding match coming down to a 3rd set tiebreak.  North Carolina was able to seize the early momentum by taking the doubles point which was a point the Tar Heels figured they’d need due to having 2 of its singles starters (#2 Ronnie Schneider-shoulder & #6 Oystein Steiro-elbow) out with injuries.  As evidenced by the the singles scores below nothing would come easy on any of the courts...
