The number of head coaching jobs at Power 5 schools is now up to six after LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva announced on Monday that men’s head coach Jeff Brown was resigning after 20 years. Brown won just over 60 percent of the 517 matches he coached and was an even .500 against SEC competition. Brown’s LSU teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament 17 times however this year the Tigers fell well short after going 10-17 overall and just 3-9 in the SEC. Top seed Vanderbilt knocked off top ranked Florida 4-3 to win the SEC Championship in match that was played indoors at Vanderbilt. Florida played without Josie Kuhlman (#2 singles/#3 doubles) who was sick with a stomach illness but the Gators still rolled through the doubles point to take the early lead. Vandy’s Astra Sharma tied the match with a win at No. 1 but Florida’s Kourtney Keegan made it 2-1 with a win at No. 5. TCU continued its hot streak on Monday afternoon when the Horned Frogs won its ninth straight match with a 4-0 win over No. 26 South Florida. TCU won the doubles point for the 14th time in 18 matches with a 6-1 win at No. 2 and a 6-4 win at No. 3. TCU won all six opening sets in singles and Reese Stalder was the first to finish with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6. A few minutes later play was halted due to rain so they ended up going indoors to finish the match out. This past weekend was the first chance for several teams to knock the dust off their racquets and it was also our first chance to see some of the freshmen and January roster additions in action. Florida State welcomed in Florida Atlantic, South Alabama, Mercer, Troy, Florida A&M, and Georgia State for the FSU Invitational this weekend but the hosts couldn’t pull off the weekend sweep after Georgia State surprised them 4-2 in the championship match. FSU won the doubles point fairly comfortably with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 but Georgia State rebounded in singles taking four first sets.
