The opening round of singles at Wimbledon went about as good as expected with players with college ties going 4-2. John Isner, Steve Johnson, and Jennifer Brady won in straight sets while Kevin Anderson came back from a set down to knock out the No. 31 seed Fernando Verdasco in four sets. Cameron Norrie made his Grand Slam debut but the No. 12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga knocked him out in just 1 hour and 23 minutes. Irina Falconi was the only former collegian to come through qualies but she lost in straight sets to the top seed Angelique Kerber though it was a respectable 6-4, 6-4 scoreline. The opening day of Wimbledon qualies was a good one for those with college tennis ties as 11 of 18 men picked up opening round wins. 2015 USC graduate Roberto Quiroz defeated 2011 Texas graduate Ed Corrie in the only matchup between two former college players. Corrie jumped out to a 6-4, 3-1 lead but Quiroz won 10 straight games to go up 5-0 in the third and would close it out 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Benjamin Becker, who won the 2004 NCAA Singles Championship, moved on to the second round with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Yasutaka Uchiyama. East Tennessee State Athletic Director Dr. Richard Sander announced the hiring of Martin Stiegwardt as the Buccaneers new Director of Tennis and Men’s Tennis Head Coach. Stiegwardt had spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach at three different schools (VCU/Auburn/LSU) with his most recent stop at LSU last season. Stiegwardt replaced Yaser Zaatini who resigned after 14 season due to allegations of falsified documents. New Oklahoma men’s head coach Nick Crowell announced the hiring of Nate Feldman as the Sooners’ new assistant coach. Feldman, who played at Minnesota from 2002 to 2004, was the assistant coach under Jay Udwadia at Oklahoma State for the last two seasons. He also has head coaching experience after leading both the men’s and women’s teams at Norfolk State from 2011 to 2014. Steve Johnson (USC ’12) started the day off by losing a heartbreaker to Andy Murray in the quarterfinals of the Olympics singles draw but he rebounded a few hours later in the doubles bronze medal match. Johnson, who was seeded 12th in the singles draw, dropped the opening set 6-0 to the second seed Andy Murray but Johnson fought back and nearly pulled off the upset. Johnson took the second set 6-4 and went up a break at 4-3 in the third but Murray broke back to even it at 4-4. The match went to a third set tiebreak with Murray pulling away for a 7-6(2) win.
