While several former collegians were playing Davis Cup last week there were others that were out on the pro circuit taking care of business. Former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, Kevin King, won a pro singles title for the second consecutive week after defeating former TCU star Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-1 in the finals of the $50K Atlantic Tire Championships in Cary, North Carolina. King, who served as a volunteer assistant at Georgia Tech last season while rehabbing an injury to both of his hips, won the week prior at a Futures event in Toronto and with the points from both of those events added in he has now risen to a new career-high ranking of 253. Wake Forest rising sophomore Borna Gojo is one match away from qualifying for the main draw at the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open after he picked up his first-ever top 100 win on Saturday. Gojo, who entered the weekend with an ATP ranking of 808, held off Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans (ATP #100) 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(6) in 2 hours and 29 minutes. Gojo fell behind 2-0 in the opening set before winning three straight and he’d eventually take the set in a tiebreak. Georgia Tech rising senior Chris Eubanks and 2012 Georgia Tech graduate Kevin King lost in the doubles final last week in Winston-Salem but this week they struck pay dirt and won the title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dominik Koepfer (Tulane ’16) and Luis David Martinez. Eubanks and King only faced two breaks points all match and they fought both off while breaking their opponents two times. Eubanks and King both won their quarterfinal singles matches and will meet in the semifinals just six days after playing in the final last week. Eubanks defeating USC rising sophomore Riley Smith 7-6(2), 6-4 while King defeated Henry Craig (Denver ’16) 6-2, 6-4....

There are three pro events this week in the United States and all three have a slew of players with college ties that are still in the draw as the weekend approaches. In Winston-Salem, seven of the eight singles quarterfinalists and all four of the doubles finalists have college ties.
