UCLA and Ohio State both won outright regular season conference titles on Friday night with the Bruins defeating crosstown rival No. 6 USC 4-1 while the Buckeyes beat up No. 21 Northwestern 6-1. For a while on Sunday it looked like the top ranked team in the land was going down but when the going got tough the tough got going. Wake Forest started off the day by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 but Georgia Tech came back strong in singles and took five opening sets. Georgia Tech junior Chris Eubanks tied the match at 1-1 with a fairly routine 6-1, 6-4 win over the ITA second-ranked Petros Chrysochos at No. 1. For the second time this week No. 2 Ohio State came up short in the state of Texas after No. 11 Texas A&M rallied to win 4-3.Ohio State jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Ohio State’s No. 1 team of Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen broke for 2-1 and then they’d break again for 5-2 and would serve it out for 6-2. Most of the best tennis is usually reserved for the weekend but there was a barnburner on Wednesday afternoon in Austin between No. 8 Texas and No. 2 Ohio State. Ohio State’s Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo cruised to a quick 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles and then about 10 minutes later Ohio State’s No. 1 team of Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen would break Texas on the no-ad point for 5-4 and then serve it out for 6-4. The last time Oklahoma came into Columbus they broke Ohio State’s 200-match home court winning streak but on Sunday afternoon the only thing they’d break would be a few strings. Oklahoma looked poised to take the early lead after picking up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles but they’d let break leads slip away on the other two courts.
