The Oracle ITA preseason singles and doubles rankings were released today along with the top 10 freshmen newcomers. The singles and doubles rankings are last season’s final rankings with all the graduating seniors removed along with those that turned pro or are taking the fall off to play pro events. There are no freshmen included in these initial singles rankings. Ohio State senior Mikael Torpegaard and UCLA sophomore Ena Shibahara were No. 1 in the men’s and women’s singles rankings. The start of the 2017 dual-match season is just a few weeks away so it’s time to look ahead to see what’s in store for the next five months. I listed the returning singles starters, returning depth players (didn’t list all just ones I think will have a chance to play), key departures, and additions. I’m sure they’ll be some January roster additions that haven’t been announced yet so these rankings are based off what is known to this point. The ITA’s first team rankings of the season should be out shortly so here is my top 20 along with a few questions for each team. I’m thinking that both Oklahoma and Baylor will have some January roster additions and Wake Forest should have their guys added in a few days. It seems like there are more teams counting on freshman this year than I can remember in the past. I can’t see anyway that Virginia isn’t the preseason #1 because they’ve got it all. The ITA released its preseason rankings today with Oklahoma’s Axel Alvarez #1 in the men’s singles rankings and Stanford’s Carol Zhao #1 in the women’s singles rankings. Georgia’s Austin Smith and Ben Wagland are the men’s #1 doubles duo with Florida’s Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan the women’s #1 duo.
