For the second time in the last three weeks Virginia director of athletics Craig Littlepage welcomed in a new head tennis coach. The day after the NCAA team championships he named Andres Pedroso as the director of tennis and head men’s coach and today he named Sara Anundsen O’Leary as the new women’s head coach. O’Leary comes to Charlottesville after spending the last three seasons as the women’s head coach at Davidson where she led the Wildcats to a 45-21 (.682) record. Tennys Sandgren, who spent two years at Tennessee and just won the USTA’s French Open Wild Card, won his second Challenger of the year with a straight set win Joao Pedro Sorgi at the $75K Savannah Challenger.Kevin King (Georgia Tech ’12) won his fourth singles title and tenth doubles title after sweeping the Mexico F2 Futures in Villahermosa. While most of us are spending the holiday season closer to home guys like Evan King are still out on the road trying to earn some extra points to better position themselves up for next year. The 2013 Michigan graduate has spent the last three weeks in the Dominican Republic and after a singles and doubles runner-up showing two weeks ago he was able to get the sweep this week. Brayden Schnur finished off the last US pro event of the year with a three-set win over Virginia senior JC Aragone in the finals of the $25K USA F40 Futures in Tallahassee, Florida. Aragone, who was playing in his first career pro final, broke Schnur at love to go ahead 5-3 in the first set but Schnur broke back from 30/40 and went on to win the final four games of the set. In the second set Aragone fought off a pair of break points on his 2-2 service game and then he broke Schnur at love to make it 4-2. Aragone would hold two more times to take the second set 6-3. The Skupski Brothers, Ken (LSU 07) and Neal (LSU ’12), won their 14th career doubles title as a team with a tough three set win over Purav Raja and Divij Sharan in the finals of the $85K Slovakia Challenger in Bratislava. The Skupskis got broken to start the match and ended up dropping the opening set 6-4 but they rallied in the second set and after opening up a 3-0 lead they took the set 6-3. In the third set supertiebreak, the Skupski Brothers went up a mini-break at 3-1 and would never trail again as they closed it out 10-5. Ken’s ATP doubles ranking is up to #77 while Neal’s is at #85.
