Pro Circuit Recap & College ATP Rankings

John Peers (Baylor ’11) was the big winner this past weekend after he and his doubles partner Henri Kontinen won their first ATP Masters 1000 event at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. Peers, who spent three years at Middle Tennessee State before transfering to Baylor for his senior year, and Kontinen defeated the ATP No. 1 team of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. It was the fourth title this year for the pairing and overall it was Peers’s 23rd career title. Holt Wins SoCal; Pro Circuit Recaps; College ATP Rankings

USC freshman Brandon Holt won the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Monday afternoon with a straight set win over senior teammate Nick Crystal. Holt broke Crystal from 30/40 to take the opening set 6-4 but Crystal looked like he’d take the early break lead in the second after going ahead 0/40 on Holt’s 1-1 service game. Holt managed to come back and hold for 2-1 but Crystal would even it at 2-2 after coming back from 15/40 down. Pro Circuit Recap – Week of 10/10 – 10/16

13 players with college ties won pro events last week with another 15 finishing as runner-up. Wil Spencer (Georgia ’12) won his third career Futures singles title with a straight set win over Illinois junior Aron Hiltzik at the $25K USA F31 Futures in Houston. Spencer broke Hiltzik from 15/40 to take the first set 6-4 and then after falling behind 3-1 in the second Spencer reeled off five straight games to close it out 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 18 minutes. It took about a month but Monmouth Athletic Director Marilyn McNeil announced the hiring of Alex Kasarov as the Hawks new men’s head coach. Kasarov was the men’s assistant coach at Davidson for the last two season and replaces Kyle Bailey who departed after a few months to become the new men’s assistant at South Carolina. Hofstra Director of Atheltics Jeffrey Hathaway announced the hiring of Jason Pasion as the Pride’s new men’s and women’s head coach. USONP Continues, Ellen Perez Earns USO Wild Card, Pro Circuit Recap

The singles finals of this year’s US Open National Playoffs will take place on Monday with the women’s final getting underway at noon eastern and the men’s final starting shortly after that match finishes. Each winner will get a wild card into the qualifying tournament of this year’s US Open. Sophie Chang and Sanaz Marand (North Carolina ’11) both won in straight sets on Sunday with Chang defeating Nika Kukharchuk (Ole Miss ’08) 7-5, 6-2 while Marand ousted Julia Elbaba (Virginia ’16) 6-4, 6-4.
