Saturday was a busy day out west with USC and Baylor advancing to the finals of the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge while Oregon defeated Tulane to win the San Diego Spring Break Tournament. Virginia played its first competitive match in a month and dominated Notre Dame in South Bend. Mississippi State, Auburn, and Florida each went on the road in the SEC and won 4-3 matches.USC booked its spot in Sunday’s final with a 4-1 win over No. 9 Oklahoma. It seems like usually when USC and UCLA meet the match comes down to a deciding court but that was not the case tonight. USC jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then the Trojans took four opening sets in singles. Three weeks ago when these teams met Thibault Forget lost to Austin Rapp in three sets at No. 4 but tonight Forget cruised to a straight set win over Rapp at No. 5. In the last meeting, USC freshman Brandon Holt lost the decider to Martin Redlicki 6-4 in the third but tonight Holt got revenge with a straight set win which made it 3-0. Texas A&M started off its season by losing three of its first four but after tonight’s come from behind 4-3 win at Florida they’ve now won five in a row with the last three coming on the road. Florida jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and then the Gators also added four opening sets in singles. The ITA announced the Men’s National Team Indoors All-Tournament team on Thursday with Virginia filling four of the six singles spots and two of three doubles teams. Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard was named the tournament MVP after going 4-0 in singles at No. 1 with wins over Oklahoma’s Andrew Harris, Oklahoma State’s Julian Cash, Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos, and Virginia’s Collin Altamirano. The opening day of the 2017 Men’s National Team Indoor Championships is in the books and it was an action packed day that saw one exciting dual-match after another. Each of the four time slots had at least one close match and the 3:30 time slot had two close ones. The top two seeds, Virginia and Wake Forest, faced the least resistance while the No. 3 seed Ohio State faced some resistance but managed to close out enough courts before Oklahoma could get on the board.
